Qué harás

Get up close and personal with the hairy horned cattle of the Highlands.

Guests will be inspired by learning of the history and character of the Highland breed in the surroundings of the self-built Roundhouse. Then we will walk to the purpose built Meeting Barn (shared between humans and animals as in days past). We gather in the atrium of tall larch logs around the central hearth sharing stories about our animals, as our ancestors did in the forests of this land. You will meet the animals that are being hand reared and taught to walk for the shows and spectacles for which pedigree Highlanders go through their paces. You will be introduced to Baby and Boy -giant sweet-natured bullocks who adore being combed and talked to. Next, (weather permitting!;-)) you will see the main herd of breeding mothers with their babies -(the nearest thing to real-life teddy bears!)- and Dougie the timid, affectionate bull. Afterwards you can explore the pastures where the animals roam at large. At the end of the tour you are free to wander the farm under your own steam, or enjoy stunning walks in the immediate vicinity with magnificent photographic opportunities. For those wanting to deepen their understanding of the Highlanders, on-farm accommodation is available on Airbnb Crofthouse at the Roundhouse (sleeping up to 8) or Hairy Cow Studio (cosy for 1-2 people).

When I followed my grandad in farming in Inverness-shire the Highlander was the only choice for me. I knew they didn't need to be kept in sheds over Winter...(which was kind of useful as I didn't have any!) In fact I didn't have much of anything: no equipment, no house, few fences, few gates so the cattle needed to be virtually self sufficient. While living alongside them over the next decade I found a growing delight in working with them. Since those early days I built my house and have produced national champions among my four legged companions:-) In 2018 I was elected to the Highland Cattle Society Council, managing and safeguarding the future of this wonderful breed. In 2019 we constructed a building, purpose designed to enable visitors to experience the animals for themselves and learn about their place in Highland culture.

Roy is a wonderful man with heaps of love and passion for his cows which made the experience feel very special. He is incredibly welcoming and charasmatic, I could have spoken with him for hours! His place is incredible, it was covered in snow and it was so magical. We first warmed up by the fire and had tea and homemade fresh scotch pancakes which was a lovely touch.

Incredible experience. Roy is amazing, you can tell he is so passionate about what he does. The animals are well looked after and you can see the bond between Roy and his cows. We had a lovely day and it was so nice to get up close and personal to the cows. Have already recommended to friends! Would happily come back!

An amazing experience from start to finish. Roy, his volunteers and his gorgeous and gentle “beasties” made us feel so welcome. Was so great to get up close to the Highland Coos, feed the babies and learn more about Roy, his animals and the farm. We would definitely recommend this experience for all the family.

That was an amazing experience! We had a chance to meet 6 cows and bulls, to communicate with them really close. We feed a 7 weeks baby-cow with some milk, gave food to a nice, friendly pregnant cow and brushed two charming bulls. Roy is the best story teller, very enthusiastic and loving his business.
