This beautiful, eery, large, yet contraversial sculpture sits ' on a quiet part of the beach between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Its sculptor Maggie Hamblin created it as a lasting tribute to Benjamin Britten who lived in Aldeburgh and founded the Aldeburgh Festival which has continued up to the current day, albeit with a couple of years' hiatus during the pandemic, and is held at Snape Maltings. Feel free to sit or climb on the Scallop. When it was finished some locals were very upset that it was there and tried to get it moved to Lowestoft. I'm glad they didn't.

We are very close to the river Alde estuary as our site borders it. The loveliest support is by the Brick Dock where we have a sandy beach bordering the the lovely estuary. Great if you're a birder be it summer or winter did to the vast array of wading birds that live or overwinter here. You are likely to see avocets, oystercatchers, curlews, redshank amongst others, and maybe marsh harriers or Spoonbills. Beyond the river wildlife is abundant too. The views are incredible and most are not aware this little spot exists.

Neighbourhoods

Aldeburgh is unique and inspires a great bond with its visitors and it's residents. Its the Quintessentially English seaside but without the need to bring children with you to enjoy yourself. In fact there's no pier, no amusements or casinos, no bookies on the high street? No roller coasters or slot machines. Having been a successful shipbuilding town for many hundreds of years the River Alde silted up and took its unique course 12 miles running parallel to the coast before going out to sea at Shingle Street, the only River in the UK which is prevented from connecting is estuary to the sea due to the sandbar. The town is now predominantly tourist, art and food and the housing is a mix of owner occupied, second home and holiday lets.
