Two streets, Higuera and Marsh, form the downtown area. Great restaurants, shops, and microbreweries. Thursday evenings the Farmer's Market is a must-do. Higuera Street is closed; there is entertainment at most intersections along the street. Food, fresh veggies and fruits, local cheeses and honey.....who needs more?

Spoon Trade is our go-to restaurant. With a demonstration kitchen, you can enjoy the work of a local chef, who runs the restaurant along with his wife. They also own the Sourdough Bakery across the street. We had guests love Spoon Trade so much that they went there for Friday dinner, Saturday dinner, and Sunday Brunch.

If you are looking for those big reds, Zin, Petite Syrah, Cab, Tannat, this is the place. They are located 6 miles from Chateau Edelweiss in the Edna Valley. We have never met a wine at Sextant that we would EVER consider pouring in the bucket. They have a cafe so no outside food. .....Catherine and Phil's pick - Wheelhouse Zinfandel.

Manrock is owned by a local couple; we watched their microbrew grow from six bar stools and a janitor's closet converted to hold the tanks, to their current location. They continue to get more and more popular. What's on tap varies day to day, because it is all made on site. And yes....Phil and I were some of the early supporters who fought for two of those six bar stools.

Parks & Nature

HIKING http://www.hikespeak.com/central-coast/san-luis-obispo/ For hiking - moderate hikes ( We call them strolls) Montana de Oro bluff trail. It is a beautiful (level) hike along a rugged coast line with a picnic table in the middle that screams scones and a thermos of coffee in the morning. Closer to San Luis Obispo there is Johnson Ranch. For more strenuous hiking in Montana de Oro State Park there is the Valencia Peak and Oat Peak trails. Closer to San Luis Obispo there is Bishop's Peak - a local favorite.

The bluff trail borders the rugged coastline for spectacular views of Morro Rock and the undeveloped coastline. It is a great place for a run as well. Stopping by Sylvester's Burgers in Los Osos afterwards is a must do. There is also a great winery in the area - Baker and Brain Winery, Los Osos. Coupons available in the apartment. And Mr. Brain is really a university professor.... one of the owners. Is that not the perfect name ....Professor Brain?
