Food Scene

A great place for eat-in or take-out. This is our go-to for movie night or when watching a big game. Not only do they have our family-favorite pizza, but they also have salads, soups, and other great stuff. Note: no delivery, but they are just a mile away, at the bottom of the hill before you enter town.

Schroon Lake's go-to for when you want nice sit-down service without the table cloth. The interior is gorgeous (most people don't know it was designed by/used to be a well-known rustic furniture maker's gallery), there's a full bar area, fireplace, patio, outdoor fire pit, and music in the summer, etc.

Breakfast! Lunch and dinner, too, but this is the local diner of sorts...ADK style diner that is: instead of chrome siding and swivel stools, you get mounted fish, painted saws, and booths. If you have room, get the strawberry rhubarb pie!

Great little cafe right downtown. Friendly staff and terrific drinks for those who like something more exciting than a regular coffee.

Parks & Nature

A lovely beach and swimming area with a raft, lifeguards, a playground, and a big grassy hill (for rolling down in the summer and for sledding down in the winter). The docks are also a good place for the wee ones to cast a line in and catch a sunny or perch.

First things first: it's *Mount* Severance. We don't like to call it a hill round these parts. But in fairness, it's an easy hike for the family. It's about 1.2 miles to the top (2.4 miles roundtrip) with about 700 feet of elevation gain. From the top, you'll have beautiful views out over Schroon Lake. From the house, it's an easy 5-minute drive to the trailhead, and there's always plenty of parking. Fast hikers can get up and down in an hour, but meanderers with curious minds can easily stretch it into a 4-hour nature hike adventure!

Stewart's is where you go for things in Schroon including coffee, delicious ice cream, and local gossip. And floatie toys. And lotto tickets. And beverages. And gas.

It's where you get groceries if they don't have what you need at Stewart's! The prices aren't actually that bad for the location in the middle of nowhere...but the avocados are. Suggestion: if planning a meal that requires special produce items (and avocados count as special in Schroon), stop and do some grocery shopping in Glens Falls on your way in (or Plattsburgh if you're coming in from the north).

Newly renovated and has an amazing kids section. They even have these little "adventure kits" you can check out (ex., a little backpack with a book about bugs, a bug net, a magnifying glass, etc.). I'm proud to say that my mom was the one who got that started at the library, and people seem to love it! The library is a couple hundred yards from the town beach.

Sightseeing

If you like history, then Fort Ticonderoga over on Lake Champlain is worth the trip. It'll take you 30-45 mins to drive over there, but it's a beautiful drive.

A cool historical spot--especially if you're into Civil Rights and/or Civil War history--is John Brown's farm up in Lake Placid, NY. Brown is buried there, and you can learn a lot about his life on the placards all around the property. Sometimes the house is open for tours. And the view from that spot is also incredible--mountains everywhere, plus the ski jumps from the 1980 Olympics.

Schroon River Canoe & Kayak Access

If you have two cars, you might like to park one at the Town Beach, then take the other (with canoe/kayaks) up to the Canoe & Kayak Access point at 144 NY-74, Schroon Lake, NY. You can easily spend a half-day on the water and even get some fishing in! Note: avoid this option if the water is especially low late in the summer.

Fishing!

If you're NOT bringing a boat, the town dock is probably the place for casual fishing--my siblings and I caught some of our first fish (sunnies and perch, mostly) off the dock that's right there at the boat launch. Further out in the lake the fishing is good, and the lake's deep enough that there's plenty of cool water down there for pike and some big bass! This site also has some great suggestions for local fishing access: https://www.adirondackhub.com/blog/2017/04/wild-places-wild-fishing. Or stop in the local bait store (see above) to ask for some tips!

Hiking!

In terms of hiking in the area, a lot depends on how long and hard—or short and easy!—you want your hike to be. Because time constraints and abilities vary, we highly recommend a website called AllTrails (it also has a very good smartphone app). Using AllTrails, you can easily search for hikes, and each one will be rated and often reviewed by multiple users, so you'll get a good sense of how hard the hike will be and how long it might take you. We've hiked around here for decades, and we still use the app to find hidden gems we've overlooked.

Mountain Biking!

Probably the best resource is the MTB Project's guide to the Adirondack Region. You can find it here: https://www.mtbproject.com/directory/8009525/adirondack-region. If that link doesn't work, try searching "MTB Project" and "Adirondack Region" and "mountain biking" and you should have no trouble finding it. You'll notice the site above doesn't list any trails for Schroon Lake, but go to this site and you'll find some options: https://www.schroonlakeregion.com/what-to-do/outdoor-activities/biking

Boat Launching

The nearest boat launch is less than 2 miles away (right next to the Town Beach), and if you're bringing a boat, that's the place to start. Note: You'll have plenty of room in the driveway for the fishing boat/trailer.
