Parks & Nature

I believe this is the biggest enclosed park in any European city. It has dozens of sports clubs and pitches - soccer, rugby, GAA, cricket, polo, running tracks - and is where the new Irish go for picnics and barbecues in the Summer. Despite this there are lots of quiet and secluded places to explore, like the Furry Glenn on the Chapelizod side of the park. Also occasional concerts, farmer's markets, Dublin Zoo. Website phoneixpark.ie for events and information. Get the Luas tram from Parnell Street to Huston Station, cross over the Liffey bridge and 5 minutes walk to the park entrance, where you can hire a bike or take a guided bike tour.

In one of Dublin's famous Georgian squares, a place to sit or bring the kids - children's playground with swings and rides, free to enter. 10 minutes walk. Located in the centre of Mountjoy Square, once Dublin's premier Georgian area, and comprising 1.8 hectares, this park was originally created by the Developer of the Square, Luke Gardiner, Lord Mountjoy around 1800. Sadly neglected during the 20th century it is being gradually restored to its original layout, with nice planting and plenty of seating to enjoy a quiet time in the heart of the city, and gravel paths for jogging.
