There are a few of these cafes now in the area but the nearest is in Longhoughton. They do an excellent breakfast. You can cycle or walk here via the coastal pathway (left out of front door). Carry on to next bay (sugar sands) approx 1 mile. Stay above the beach and follow path until you reach left hand farm road that leads all the way to Longhoughton (approx couple of miles). Turn right at main road and The running Fox is shortly afterwards on right.

Beadnell is probably the busiest beaches on the Northumberland coast sometimes know as ‘Gosforth on Sea’. Though it’s 25 minutes drive north it’s worth a trip. The bay is well protected and good for swimming and water sports. There are a few good eating options but for a buzzy vibe you won’t beat Beadnell Towers. This is a high spec, trendy with excellent menu and cocktails. Probably not for you if you are looking for low key and rustic.

Alnwick castle is a really good family day out whatever the weather. There is always plenty to do and see. The castle is privately owned by Duke of Northumberland and he and his family still spend half the year living here. You can see inside many of the state rooms as well as getting involved with the many family activities. These often include broomstick riding (the famous Harry Potter films were filmed here), making medieval soaps and tiles. Flying birds of prey, dressing up in medieval costume and learning to be a knight. If there is still time after that visit the Alnwick Garden next-door.

The castle is great to visit and often has outside theatre in the summer, but my favourite thing is the Hemitage. A lovely riverwalk meanders through Warkworth towards the jetty, were you can pick up a rowing boat to take you the short journey across the river to the steps of the Hermitage. Steeped in history the Hermitage is impressive, calming and well worth the short trip.

This is a fairly big day out. Holy island is accessed by a causeway so check tide times before you leave. Its a lovely island to explore with a lot of history and plenty of interesting bird to watch. The Lindisfarne castle is a must see as once owned by the editor of Country life magazine it is surprisingly stylish. Pick up bottle of Lindisfarne Mead on your way home. The Lindisfarne festival is a 3 day music event at the end of August.
