Assateague Island
Ponies, Beach, Marsh Walks, and Wildlife Loop.
Getting to Assateague Island to see ponies, wildlife and the beach:
-You can drive (there is a fee). Ask about purchasing a DUCK STAMP when you get to the kiosk to pay your entry. This has been the better option for us in the past. Duck stamps are good from July to June so it may not be your better option this trip.
-You can ride a bike onto Assateague Island for free. You can bring your own bike and park in Island Getaway's parking lot, or there are bike rentals on Chincoteague. The bike rental near the McDonalds is the closest one to Assateague.
-You can walk onto Assateague for free. I consider it a long walk to see anything..... I'm not a walker :)
-On Assateague there's a wildlife loop that is nice to bike or walk on. They only allow cars on it after 3PM each day, but it's a slow drive and still nice to bike or walk on after that time if you prefer.
-There are two park services on Assateague. Both have facilities with displays that are worth investigating. They also both offer activities that are usually free. Ask and see when they offer the bus tour to see the ponies for a fee.
-There is also a boat tour (pontoon boat I think) that a private company offers from Chincoteague. The girls at Island Getaways can let you know who to book with.

Great little place with outside dining. Fried oyster, Coconut Shrimp and so much more. They also have daily specials.

Cute place with full bar, and indoor and outdoor seating. I had the Tuna Tacos and Waffle fries which were very good.

Great little outside taco stand. Lots of different taco options....Fish, oyster, shrimp, etc. I've tried them all :)

If you want to take a little drive it's worth it. Great Crab Cakes. An odd kind of place that we like to go to when we are in Chincoteague. A real hole in the wall ;)

We have been eating at Ray's for 20+ years. Great fried oysters, steamed shrimp, fish sandwiches, scallops, and the list goes on. This is a popular place so you might want to make a reservation.
