My favourite restaurants

There are loads of great places to eat just a 1-10 minute walk away from The Scullery.
This is a super little place that is particularly good for veggies and vegans. Generally day time opening only but open Friday and Saturday evenings.

This is at the end of Cottage Road only a step away from The Scullery so is an easy option! You can get breakfast/brunch/light meals in the Townley Bar or a full meal in their restaurant. It has beautiful interiors and is often less busy than the packed eateries down at the harbour.

The arches on the harbour provide lots of choice. Our favourite is Archive - with an award-winning interior, delicious food and lovely homeware items, it is informal and consisently good. Enjoy the harbour from outside seating or from upstairs if the weather doesn't permit.

Another delight, a small plate and tapas restaurant, Arya is above The Ravensgate Arms in King Street - a pub worth visiting in itself. Veggie friendly.

For the veggie or vegan desperate for some good old seaside fish and chips, Shakey Shakey offers simply the best in alternative seaside takeaway fare. You can still get your traditional real fish and chips and usual takeaways as well as their really extensive veggie, vegan, gluten-free alternative menu. We love it.

There are so many things to do and these are just some of our favourites. You'll find a fuller selection of information on things to do in the box on the range in the living room.
There's great cycling around Ramsgate and Thanet. Bikes can be hired from Harbour Bikes. You can also hire electric bikes for a day or half day from Albion House Hotel just round the corner.

The boat trip around the harbour is a lovely 20 minutes with great views of the town from the sea. Or why not take a longer trip out to see the seals on the River Stour?

The award-winning Ramsgate Music Hall is just one place to catch an amazing array of live music. It's built a really good reputation in the short years it has been open and gets big names and acts as well as up and coming musicians/singers.

This is a beautiful country park with wildlife a plenty. It is a National Nature Reserve, a Special Protection Area and a Site of Significant Scientific Interest. It's known for tidal mudflats, saltmarshes, shingle beaches, sand dunes and chalk cliffs. You might catch some of the highland cattle that graze here!

Ramsgate's Heritage

Ramsgate is a truly historic town with history that stretches from the Romans, Vikings and early Christians to the Georgians and Victorians and on to the present day. You can spend many hours looking at the spectacular architectural heritage or in visiting specific sites of historical interest.
A perfect Georgian/Regency square with its gardens and tennis courts in the centre. The houses were built for officers in British Army fighting in the Napoleonic wars. Van Gogh lived in one of the houses and taught in another, hence the two blue plaques for him on the square and the bust of him in the gardens.

Liverpool Lawn is truly beautiful. Ramsgate has several 'lawns' consisting of Georgian/Regency houses built around a central lawn. Some of these architectural gems no longer have their lawns - Guildford Lawn is another beauty but the Victorians built further homes on the lawn - but Liverpool Lawn is intact and there is even an unaccessible entrance to the labyrinth of tunnels that lie under Ramsgate and that were used for shelter during the war.

Ramsgate has a noble sea-faring history and the sailor's church commemorates those engaged in maritime and naval activities. Ramsgate has the only royal harbour in the country. It was awarded this status by George IV. Look out for the Smack Boys' Home next to the church. This was a philanthropic enterprise to take care of the many teenage boys that worked on the smack boats during the months that the boats couldn't be put out to sea.
