Dún na Rí Forest Park forms part of what was formerly the Cabra Estate which was owned by the Pratt family. It is a 25 minute drive from Inniskeen. Legend stretches back to the time of Cuchullain the Gaelic warrior who rested in these woods while fighting the armies of Queen Maeve of Connaught. The O’ Reilly family owned the lands up until the end of the 16th century when they were acquired by Thomas Fleming who built Flemings Castle . The ruins of the castle can still be seen in the park. The estate was acquired by the Pratt family and they built the town of Kingscourt in the years 1760-1770. The lands were acquired by the Irish Forest Service in 1959 and were developed into a forest park in the early 1970s. Dún na Rí was made famous in the song sung by Ruby Murray in the 50's 'Oh! To Be In Dún na Rí'. It is said that in going to the Wishing Well your wishes may come true (as the story goes by the late great story teller Michael Quinn.) There is a great diversity of wildlife in the Forest park. The flora is varied and in many areas spectacular. The tree storey is dominated by oak and ash but includes many other species often with an under storey of hazel, holly and rhododendron. The ground is, in season, carpeted with a rich layer of plants including snowdrops, bluebells, wood anemone, woodrush, foxgloves, wood sorrel and a wide range of ferns. Walking is a great way to experience the delights of Dun a Ri while also benefiting both physical and mental health. Set your pace to suit your enjoyment and you will quickly feel fitter and better. There are a number of beautiful sculptures within the park There is a pay barrier at this Forest Park. Check open and closing times on arrival. Parking Fee: €5.00 Per Car (Coins Only) Annual Access Card €40.00

Historical

All people are living histories which is why History matters. (Penelope J. Corfield) Historians are often asked: What is the use or relevance of studying History (the capital letter signalling the academic field of study)? Why on earth does it matter what happened long ago? The answer is that History is inescapable. It studies the past and the legacies of the past in the present. Far from being a 'dead' subject, it connects things through time and encourages its students to take a long view of such connections. All people and peoples are living histories.

The Carrickmacross Lace Gallery in County Monaghan is a showcase of traditional Irish lace, made famous by its inclusion in the wedding dresses of Princess Diana and the Duchess of Cambridge. Carrickmacross lace was introduced into Ireland in around 1820 by Mrs Grey Porter of Donaghmoyne, who taught the art to local women so they could earn some extra income. Her initiative sparked a now world-famous lace industry with a distinctive style all of its own. In the 19th century, lace craft became an important source of rural family income and today, Carrickmacross lace is still hand-worked by a select group of craftspeople, passionate about the beauty of fine, meticulously worked needlecraft. The magnificent Proleek Portal Tomb, is situated in the grounds of Ballymascanlon Hotel on the legendary Cooley Peninsula in County Louth. It is one of the finest examples of its kind in Ireland. Portal tombs have two tall stones at the front (portal stones) and a smaller stone at the back supporting a large capstone. A portal tomb resembles a giant’s table and is sometimes called a dolmen, which comes from the Breton word tolmen meaning stone table. Proleek Portal Tomb is about 3m high and has a huge capstone weighing approximately 35 tons. Legend says that a wish will be granted to anyone who can throw a pebble on its capstone so that it stays there. The two front portal stones are 2m high. Known as the Giant’s Load, it is believed that it was carried to Ireland by a Scottish giant named Parrah Boug McShagean (who is said to be buried nearby). There is also a Bronze Age wedge tomb nearby. Access: By foot, about 300-400m from hotel car park but there are firm surface paths all the way. Facilities: Cark park, bus park, wheelchair access, toilet and restaurant facilities in nearby hotel. Descriptions Admission Prices Free of Charge Opening Months All year during daylight hours. It is one of the main sources of employment for this area and a good shopping town with a large modern shopping mall called 'The Marches Shopping Centre' and as well as businesses in the town centre itself there is a large retail park on the edge of the town with a great cafe called 'The Park Cafe' where you can or a good meal for a sensible price. Situated along Ireland’s Ancient East, the wider Dundalk area has a wealth of cultural attractions to offer, including the County Museum, the 'Oriel Centre' at Dundalk Gaol where there usually are traditional sessions on Thursday nights, the Spirit Store Venue also a pub with great music artists and /or comic acts most weekends,. Slieve Gullion, and the Cooley Peninsula are within a short drive of Dundalk. Dundalk is often associated with the famous mythological warrior Cúchulainn from Táin Bó Cúailnge or the 'Cattle raid of Cooley'; there are signs of this all over the surrounding countryside. In Knockbridge, just outside Dundalk, there is a Standing Stone – Cúchulainn’s Stone – to which, according to legend, the fatally wounded Cúchulainn tied himself so that he could stay upright and face the opposing army. Also in Knockbridge is 'Stephenstown Pond ' where there is a walk and a cafe which is very nice place to spend a few hours Every year, in nearby Cooley, twelve of the top GAA hurlers compete in the All Ireland Poc Fada where they take the same route Cúchulainn took as a boy across the Cooley mountains to ask the high kings if he could become a warrior. To this day, you can traverse The Táin Way, the site of the epic saga where Queen Meadbh of Connacht and her armies battled Cúchulainn for the Brown Bull of Cooley. For further information on any of these attractions and to find out more about what you can see and do in the Louth area, please visit the Ireland’s Ancient East website. Inniskeen Church and Tower is in the village centre. Deriving from 'Inniscain Deagh' of 'the fair island of Dega' (Canon Leslie) the name refers to Daigh, the patron saint who was son of Cairell, Bishop of Inniskeen. His festival days is the 18th August. For some hundreds of years the parish was appropriated by Louth Abbey. The present church was built on this ancient site in 1854. From 1902 it was joined with Killany and also with Donaghmoine in 1921. in 1953 it was joined to Carrickmacross and was closed in 1970. This is one of the two places in Co. Monaghan that has the remains of a round tower.

From 1902 it was joined with Killany and also with Donaghmoine in 1921. in 1953 it was joined to Carrickmacross and was closed in 1970. This is one of the two places in Co. Monaghan that has the remains of a round tower.

Enjoying a superb location, Greenore Golf Club is located 100km/60 miles equidistant between Dublin and Belfast main international airports and is just a 33 minute drive from Inniskeen. The course is also just a five minute drive from the beautiful medieval village of Carlingford which offers an abundance of good restaurants and accommodation including the new 4 Star Four Seasons Hotel & Leisure Centre. Greenore is a magnificent course set along Carlingford Lough with the back drop of both the Sileve Foy & Mourne Mountains. The course has a good mix of traditional links and heathland terraine. The fairways are surrounded by golden gorse on one side and the water of Carlingford Lough on the other, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for any who may stray from the prescribed path. The Greens are fast and many are small in size rejecting any shot lacking conviction. This is a true test of any player’s command of the traditional bump and run in the hard fast summer months or a high soft pin seeker in the winter. he Club House Bar & Restaurant prides itself for the warm friendly atmosphere experienced by members and visitors. Fishing

Ireland is recognised as being the outstanding fishing holiday destination in Europe. The vast variety and quality of fishing in Ireland makes it the perfect destination for your angling holiday.
Inland Fisheries Ireland welcomes you to Ireland’s North East. This area which comprises parts of counties Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan contains many of the undiscovered angling jewels of Ireland. There are a number of well-established angling centres in this area and a host of excellent fishing venues that cater for the needs of trout and salmon anglers. Fishing is available through angling associations and riparian owners and day permits can be purchased in most of the main angling centres. Many angling associations support a policy of catch and release and fishing on association waters must be consistent with the current rules and regulations of the various associations. Wild brown trout fishing is available on the rivers Dee, Glyde, Fane, and Clarebane. The Ulster and Monaghan Blackwater rivers which are located in County Monaghan contain good stocks of wild and stocked brown trout. The Ulster Blackwater can get a run of Dollaghan trout close to the end of the fishing season. Anglers more interested in lake fishing will find a number of well managed lakes in the Drumconrath, Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Emyvale areas. These lakes hold stocks of wild and stocked trout and day permits are available locally in each of these areas. The rivers Dee, Fane, Glyde, Ballymascanlan and Castletown get runs of salmon and sea trout between June and September. The Fane has the added advantage of staying open until 12th October. This is a link to a guide on the various areas to visit on your trip. Wild brown trout fishing is available on the rivers Dee, Glyde, Fane (our river here), and Clarebane. The Ulster and Monaghan Blackwater rivers which are located in County Monaghan contain good stocks of wild and stocked brown trout. The Ulster Blackwater can get a run of Dollaghan trout close to the end of the fishing season. Anglers more interested in lake fishing will find a number of well managed lakes in the Drumconrath, Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Emyvale areas (all near us). You dont have far to go just the end of our garden!!
