Neighborhoods

Our Neighborhood: Portland's West End is a designated Portland Historical District with a unique range of fascinating architecture. Voted "Portland's Best Neighborhood" in by the Portland Phoenix Magazine, it is perfectly situated on the peninsula. A few blocks to the West takes you to the Western Promenade Park for great sunsets and on a clear day you can even see Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Not much traffic and lots of friendly people. The West End remains one of the best-preserved Victorian neighborhoods in the country. It is dear to our hearts because of the historic neighborhood feel and how walkable it is to everything: Deering Oaks Park (check out the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings in the summer), Arts District, Old Port, East Bayside, the Eastern Prom. And if walking in the rain or snow isn’t an option, a quick Lyft/Uber/taxi ride is a great alternative. If you leave our house and take a left out of our driveway and walk up Ellsworth Street, you will see the entrance to the emergency room of Maine Medical Center. If you keep going, you will hit the Western Prom, which is a historic promenade and public park/recreation area. Watching the sun set from this Prom is what the Portlander’s do, so grab a blanket or take your car and see it for yourself. If you take a right out of our driveway, and follow our road until it becomes Vaughan, then follow that until it becomes Congress Street, you are on your way to the Arts District. While on your way, make sure to stop at Tandem Bakery, they have the most out of this world baked goods (and oatmeal--no kidding!) and coffee this town has to offer. If you keep going down Congress, you will hit the Portland Museum of Art, Space Gallery, Maine College of Art (first two floors are open to the public), and the Institute of Contemporary Art. If you are not here for art, but the food, read our recommendations under section Get your Eat and Drink On

Consejos para la ciudad

Facilidad para moverse por la casa

Parking is difficult, especially in summer.

If you are flying in, good. Otherwise park your car and walk, order a ride share (Lyft, Uber), or bike!
