Food scene

This is a delightful little cafe new to Calabogie in 2020. The Ella in Oh-el-la offers European-inspired casual breakfasts and lunches (good vegetarian options), hearty soups and of course great coffees and teas. Great vibe and service. In the summers there are outdoor tables overlooking the lake. In the winter there's a groovy "glamping tent" with a cozy stove and some tables and couches. Try it!

Superior Ottawa Valley pub-grub and an awesome selection of draft beers from the valley and beyond are the hallmarks of the Redneck Bistro. Indoor and outdoor seating depending on the season. Meat-eating boys and girls with motorized toys seem to love this place so you'll see motorcycles in the summer and snow sleds in the winter parked outside.

Good restaurant food could not be any closer to you! Just walk out the back deck, turn left and walk about 50 yards to Canthooks. Dine and and take-out. Schnitzel and lasagna are our favourites. Decent menu for kids as well.

This restaurant opened in 2021, by the same family that created Ou-el-la Cafe in 2020. Very sleek. Exquisite Euro-inspired food (with the humble hamburger also available) and fabulous cocktail menu (in keeping with the name). Go for it, but make reservations. Gorgeous views over the lake in winter through huge windows, and the best lakeside patio in Calabogie in the warmer months, bar none.

If big sky and big views are your thing, Eagles Nest is for you. Spectacular! A short 5 minute drive to the trailhead/parking lot (often full in summer and fall) and then about 20 minutes of hiking to the Nest. But in rainy or snowy seasons, beware that the trails and rocks can be slippery.

Go out the back deck, turn left on the path, then turn right across the pond to get to the Manitou Mountain Trail sign. The trail is a 9 km, medium level of difficulty hiking/snowshoeing trail passing through picturesque pine forests and spectacular wilderness scenery. Along this shoulder width trail, you will encounter 3 spectacular mountain top vistas. Following ancient glacial spillways this trail begins at the Barrett Chute Trailhead with a 4-km ascent to the pristine vista lookouts at Red Arrow Rock and Manitou Mountain. The trail then continues westward 3.5 km to the peaceful Eagle’s Nest Lookout and another 1.5 km out to the Calabogie Road Trailhead. This diverse trail also links to the enchanting Lost Valley Trail and the Juniper Ridge Lookout behind Calabogie Peaks and to the scenic Skywalk Trail atop Dickson Mountain.

The new owners of Dacre Heights have turned it into a wonderful free hiking, X-country skiing, and biking destination. They encourage everyone to enjoy its 230 acres of park-like semi-wilderness. The property is roughly the shape of a diamond, with one corner touching Flat Road. The view from the top is magnificent!

Paddler or swimmer? Burnstown Beach is a 10-minute drive from Calabogie Peaks Resort. A lovely tree-shaded beach along the mighty Madawaska River, it has an awesome play structure for kids. The boat launch is also a great place to launch your kayak, canoe or motor boat. The beach is free but there is a small fee for boat trailer parking (if you are taking boats off your roof, suggest you park for free in the beach area).

This is a great little local grocer with excellent service. Though limited, there is fresh dairy, veg, meat and fruit at reasonable prices, along with all the staples plus fresh baking (Chelsea buns and raisin breads are awesome). It's also right beside the LCBO, and has gas pumps as well.

Located in the middle of a forest, this truly rustic 100-acre organic farm produces and sells vegetables, honey and maple syrup. It also retails local artisanal cheeses, coffee beans and sells hand-hewn wood products like charcuterie and bread cutting boards. The farm is "heavy-horse powered" and you may see Mike Graham working his land with the horses. About a 10-minute drive from our place on the way to Burnstown.
