Clonmel is only 4km from Turnpike Cottage and is well worth a visit. Built in the valley of the river Suir and surrounded by the Comeragh mountains and Slievenamon, it is noted for its magnificent scenery, hiking trails in the surroundings countryside and historic buildings, notably The Main Guard, Old St Mary's Church, St Patrick’s Church and Carey's Castle. Take a stroll by the River Suir and relax in one of the parks or playgrounds or visit Marlfield Lake or St Patrick's well. For shopping enthusiasts, there is easy access to the many shops including Penny's, River Island, Easons, Boots and many more shops and boutiques on the main street. Visit the Poppyfield Retail Park boasting a range of retailers including Woodies, EZ Living, Harry Corry's and DID Electrical or the Showgrounds Shopping Centre that include retail stores TK Maxx, Argos and Marks and Spencer. Visit Clomnmel Greyhound Stadium for greyhound racing every Friday and Saturday evening, the facilities include a grandstand restaurant, fast food facilities and a number of bars. Clonmel is noted in greyhound circles for being the home of the annual National Hare Coursing meeting in early February every year. Enjoy a day at the races at Clonmel racecourse which is a popular venue for horse racing that has grown and developed over a period of 150 years. It offers an exciting atmosphere in which to socialise with friends and family. The location is convenient and picturesque and offers a selection of fast food, soup, sandwiches and pastries.
