Mam tor is well known as the shivering mountain near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire at 517 metres high. Mam tor sits on the edge of the Dark Peak and the White Peak which means you get some fabulous views over the National Park and down in to the gorge of the Winnats pass. The road which snaked up the shivering mountain closed in 1979 after numerous years of maintenance trying to keep the road open and safe for cars to use, there is still lots of evidence of the road and slippage which makes for a very interesting walk above Castleton with its many eateries and hostelries.
