Beautiful view from the to a new outlook tower was just built. Hike is a bit strenuous but worth it. Mt. Peak (aka Pinnacle Peak) is a 1,801' forest-covered extinct volcanic cinder cone rising up from the flat plateau farmlands surrounding Enumclaw. In 1929 the WA Forest Fire Association built a 30' pole platform tower on top & in 1934 replaced it with a 60' tower. These lookouts were uncovered wooden platforms with a railing from which an observer could locate smoke & relay fire reports via telephone. In 1950 the DNR constructed a new 20' wooden 14x14' type L4 live-in tower. The lookout was manned fulltime during summers until 1964 when it was abandoned in favor of newer technologies for spotting wildfires. The tower was torn down on May 13, 1966, ending 37 years of service. In 2016 a volunteer group called the Mt. Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association formed around the idea to rebuild the historic fire lookout. The group worked in conjunction with King County Parks, grant donors & the local community to bring back the historic structure & provide a vantage point that has been missing for 55 years. On 10/2/2021 a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter completed placing the newly constructed tower on top of Mt. Peak. October 16, 2021 there will be a ceremonial ribbon cutting event to commemorate the completion of the Mt. Peak Historical Fire Lookout.
