Hadrian's Wall
We are located about 10 miles from Banks Turret, which is the nearest place where you can actually see the remains of Hadrian's Wall. Another 3 miles to the east is the Roman fort of Birdoswald - partially excavated with surrounding walls and gateways. Beyond the fort is a wonderful section of original Wall, which you can walk along for about one mile to the village of Gilsland.
Housesteads Fort sits astride Hadrian's Wall. Here you will find a partially excavated Roman fort, complete with commanding officer's house, the headquarters building (principia), granaries, barracks and the famous communal latrine.

There is a lot to see here including the excellent Visitor Centre that displays the best of Vindolanda's amazing finds including the world-famous writing tablets.
