A 22-minute walk south from our cottage to Mission Bay, directly in front of the Chase Center Arena (1 Warriors Way, San Francisco), is a cool, free outdoor public art display called “Seeing Spheres," created by famous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. It's an array of five 15-feet tall shiny mirrored spheres in a central space in front of the building. You can go and see your reflection multiplied in them and have fun and take some cool photos and videos. It's kind of like funhouse mirrors! The affect is kind of like the experience of "The Bean" (aka Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor) in Chicago's Millennium Park. Together they produce a surprising environment of multilayered, reflected spaces in which the same people and settings appear again and again, visible from various unexpected angles. “Seeing spheres is a public space that contains you and contains multitudes,” said Eliasson in a comment on Instagram. “We often think of public space as empty, negative space in the city, viewed from a car or crossed on the way to somewhere else. Seeing spheres offers a place to pause, where you see yourself from outside, as a participant in society.”

Just a 23-minute walk from the cottage is a sandy beach on the Bay at Crane Cove Park. San Francisco recently transformed this area of industrial shoreline into a stunning 7-acre park with a sandy beach and a gorgeous vista of the Bay. Plenty of cool historic plaques describe what the area was used for historically with famous giant ships. Crane Cove is named for its two iconic cranes, affectionately named by the community Nick and Nora, which define the identity and skyline of this area. No longer in use but protected by historic designation, the Port seeks to rehabilitate the cranes as visual reminders of the area’s past. Super fun to check out alone on a sunny day, or with friends, fam, and doggos. There's a kids' play area and a dog run area. It's between the Mission Bay and Dogpatch neighborhoods.

Alchemist Cocktail Garden is a 15-min walk or 4-min drive from the cottage. Sunny outdoor patio serves tasty food (such as deviled eggs, breakfast sandwiches, truffle fries, artichoke dip, tater tots, etc) and expertly crafted cocktails 7 days a week.
If you’re into goth music or techno, DNA lounge can be a fun club to check out. Their “Bootie music” night can tend toward the more mainstream. Decent sound system. Bathrooms can be kinda cray.

An iconic SF dance club and after hours club since 1973 in this location. During the late ‘90s and early 2000s it was the best after hours gay techno and disco in town. The 1999 film “Groove” about SF Raves has a final scene where they all go to The End Up after the share house party winds down. Those were the most fun times in SF. The End Up is still cool.

This is the MOST local bar, closest to the cottage. You need to ring the bell to get in, and then Jeremy the bartender can give you your own card that gets you in without ring the bell, (because you're a local when you stay at our cottage!) Decent cocktails and a great vibe. Try the Manhattan or Old Fashioned. They also serve American bar food and appetizers at lunchtime and early evening. Get the grilled cheese, which is excellent. Jeremy (the bartender/Host) has lived in SF for at least 30 years. He's an interesting guy with tons of local stories. They have an excellent jukebox that takes credit cards. Also, karaoke some nights and trivia nights as well. You can host your own private party there too.

Just a 6-minute walk from our cottage, is this cute women-owned cafe that serves the most delicious and inventive coffee drinks, including a maple syrup latte, chai latte, rose latte, and a honeycomb latte which comes with large pieces of honeycomb sprinkled into the drink. They have tasty pastries and baked goods too. The cafe is a partnership between two childhood best friends, both born and raised in San Francisco.

Philz Coffee is a local fave (and they got shout-outs frequently on the show "Silicon Valley"). They make custom coffee blends and specialty drinks prepared one cup at a time. The cold brew and pour-over coffees are strong and tasty, and there are creative popular specialty drinks like iced mint mojito coffee (no alcohol) and gingerbread iced lattes. There are several Philz Coffee locations within walking distance of our cottage. The Philz location at 201 Berry St (at 4th St in the Mission Bay neighborhood) is open 7 days a week, so including weekends and it's a 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive from the cottage. Another Philz location in the Financial District is open Monday-Friday (not on weekends) and it is about a 17-minute walk from our cottage. That 2nd one is located at 425 Mission St Suite 100 (between 2nd and 1st at Minna St)

SPRO is a specialty coffee and food truck located in the corner of the Spark Social SF lot in Mission Bay, about a 20-minute walk from our cottage. They offer tasty and unique menu options that include the most incredible coffee drinks and food items that are a good fusion of Californian cuisine and Asian (primarily Japanese) influence. They're open 7a.m.-4pm most days. I recommend their specialty coffees such as red velvet chocolate latte, or the cold brew coffee "Cold Fashioned" (which comes with a Luxardo cherry and orange bitters mixed in), Umami Bomb avocado toast, Almond Butter Toast (with strawberries and blueberries), Smash-Up (sous vid eggs on sourdough with mash potatoes and all sorts of deliciousness), and Japanese Blueberry Mochi Waffle.

Public Art, Murals, & Street Art Nearby

Knowledge is Golden. This mural, just around the corner from our cottage in SoMa (you can see it from the corner of 7th street from the South corner of Brannon), looks like a faded ghost sign (i.e. newly-exposed remnants of an antiquated advertising campaign from olden times). However, this one was actually painted only about a decade ago in 2012 in the midst of the 2nd tech boom by the “1 AM” group (Roman Cesario, Jurne, Robert Gonzalez & Daniel Pan) on the corner of 7th & Brannon. I shot this photo walking around the neighborhood earlier this year. I love walking around SoMa, Dogpatch, Mission Bay, and Potrero and looking at murals and street art. Artist Daniel Pan spoke to Art & Architecture San Francisco in 2013 about the mural: “For ‘Knowledge is Golden’ the inspiration was specific to the area which the mural was done. “San Francisco is seeing its second gold rush with information and knowledge being the currency of today. “SoMa, being slated to be developed as the new downtown of San Francisco with technology leading the transformation, is why we chose this location for our message. “Gold miners have been replaced by tech innovators. Pickaxes & shovels have been replaced with laptops & desktops. Though the times have changed, the human thirst for chasing opportunity remains prevalent in these times.

A 22-minute walk south from our cottage to Mission Bay, directly in front of the Chase Center Arena, is a cool, free outdoor public art display called “Seeing Spheres," created by famous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
