It's best between April and October for most people (except June through August when it's usually too hot). Some can go all year but locals usually don't between November through March when the water is too low and it's "too cold." The government does close Tonto National Forest on occasion and this does sit the river down to floaters so checking the schedule in advance is advisable. Tonto day passes are only $9 or so per vehicle and can be purchased at any local gas or grocery store.
