The Boathouse is a SB staple and a truly unique experience. Known for its breakfast, dinner, and happy hour, any time of day is a great time to visit. With indoor or outdoor seating, many tables just above the sand, and all with an amazing ocean view, dining or having drinks at the Boathouse will certainly be a memorable experience.

The Santa Barbara Public Market is a "food hall" just off of State St. that actually contains some of the best chefs in town. We can't vouch for all of the restaurants inside, but Corazon Cocina and Empty Bowl are two of our absolute favorites. If you want gourmet food and a great selection in a fast-paced yet stylish, fun environment, this is the spot. There is even a beer garden and area with large screens to watch sports.

This is our favorite local Italian restaurant. Authentic traditional Italian food served by a largely Italian staff. A comfy fire-lit patio and a slower pace make Maestra 42 a great place to have a long conversation and spend quality time with friends and family. It is located away from the Santa Barbara nightlife, so if you want to go exploring by foot after you eat, you may want to choose something around lower State Street and the Funk Zone.

McConnell's has been making ice cream in Santa Barbara for over 70 years and has certainly perfected their craft! They have multiple storefronts around SB and can be found in local grocery stores, but this particular location is our favorite. The setting feels very classic, has more selection than other locations, and is much less crowded than the State Street locations. Perfect place to take the kids or as a stop on date night. *Local Tip! This is a true Santa Barbara gem! Julia Child once stated it was her favorite place to eat in Santa Barbara. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food in the quick, easy, and cheap variety, this is the place. While you are ordering at the window, you will see the ladies making handmade tortillas by the dozens. Fresh as they come! They only accept cash. There can be a bit of a line to order, and they have limited seating. I recommend ordering to go and bringing your food to the Mission or Franceschi Park to enjoy. *Local Tip! Call in your order in advance so you can cut the line and go straight to the pick-up window.

Our entire family are big zoo fans and the Santa Barbara Zoo is one of our absolute favorites! As a medium sized zoo, what it lacks in size it makes up for in quality. Kind of like Santa Barbara itself... Each exhibit is well curated and they have an impressive collection of animals, including very rare snow leopards. The grounds of the zoo are equally impressive to walk around, bosting an incredible collection of plants. There is a small train you can ride around the perimeter of the property that is quite fun, especially for kids. The entire zoo can be viewed in about an hour if you were somewhat quick or two hours if you take your time. A trip to the zoo makes for a fun and memorable outing. How often do you look out on the beach and ocean while feeding a giraffe?

Santa Barbara is known for it's mission style architecture, and it does not get more mission style than a 200-year-old mission. The mission has a large lawn out front that many people enjoy having picnics on. There is a great view to the ocean from the mission lawn and many of the neighboring homes boast beautiful mission style architecture. *Local Tip! Beaches

This beach is down the street from the Captain's Cottage and the local's favorite! The best part of this beach is its privacy due to being lesser known and the cliffs that keep it somewhat hidden. If the tide is higher than 3.5 feet, their will not be much sand between the water and the cliff so you have to check the tide before heading down. Tide link below or feel free to text me. Local Tip! If you go to 1,000 Steps just before or right when the tide drops below 3.5 feet, go to the bottom of the steps and turn right. There is a large sandy section you cannot see from the steps, and you will likely have it all to yourself! Private beach in Southern California?? That is largely unheard of! As the tide drops and more sand can be seen from the steps, more people will show up. Also, although many people (including us) love swimming at 1,000 Steps, there are unpredictable rocks in the water. So if you are not too ocean savvy or want to swim at a more sandy beach, Leadbetter Beach to the east may be a better option for you. To access the steps down to the beach, walk left out of the driveway, make a right six houses down at Santa Cruz Blvd ., and you will see the steps down the lane to the left. This beach is dog friendly. https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/california/santa-barbara-ca/tides/#monthly-tide-chart

Just a short walk from the Captain's Cottage is another one of Santa Barbara's most popular beaches. There is a ton of sand here at all tides, so it is a perfect place to lay out and spend the day. Leadbetter is visited by many more people than 1,000 Steps; so if you are looking for a more lively beach, this often fits the mold. Many people also enjoy using the picnic tables and barbecues on the grass north of the sand. Leadbetter is also a great beginners surf spot (when there are waves). The waves are quite playful. The bottom is mostly sandy, and the point is absolutely beautiful.

Grocery Stores

High-end grocery store. Great quality and mostly artisanal type products. Significantly higher prices than a traditional grocery store. If you want to treat yourself to some special groceries, this is the place to do it. Being down the street it is also very convenient to pick up a few things quickly. They have an extensive and tasty hot food section, beer/wine/liquor, fresh meat, fish, and vegetables and, dare I say, the best chocolate chip cookie you may ever sink your teeth into. Hikes

This is one of the most popular hikes in Santa Barbara and only a 15-minute drive from The Captain's Cottage to the trailhead! The hike is approximately 3.4 miles roundtrip. The trail leads to an incredible lookout point that makes for an amazing sunrise or sunset. The view is amazing during the day as well, but be sure to check the temperature as there is no shade and you will be in the sun for the length of the hike. Specific info on the hike can be found at the link below. Although the trail is well maintained, it is recommended you have the map on your phone or printed out as the trail splits a few times and there are no signs. Your efforts will certainly be rewarded at Inspiration Point! *Local Tip! For the early risers, Lighthouse Coffee and the Bagel Market Cafe up the street from The Captain's Cottage make it convenient to get a quick bite early in the morning before hitting the trail. https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/california/inspiration-point--2?mobileMap=false&ref=sidebar-static-map

*Strenuous Hike* If you are willing to take a 45-minute coastal drive north and are looking for a more strenuous 6.5 mile roundtrip hike, the views at the top of Gaviota Peak will certainly take your breath away. The trail is a State Park-maintained dirt fire road up the back side of a mountain. You can hike back down the same way you came or keep going over the front of the mountain on a foot path that turns the hike into a loop. Hiking up and back on the fire road is a memorable hike, but the loop is really something special. The views along the front are incredible! There is also a hot spring that is commonly visited by hikers towards the bottom. You will probably need to look up details on how to find the hot spring online before going. Details on the hike can be found at the link below. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/gaviota-peak-trail

To be honest, we have never been here but it is quite popular, and we have friends who absolutely swear by it. The trailhead is about 15 minutes from The Captain's Cottage. If you like hot springs, go exploring and you might find somewhere even the Captain has not been to. More info at link below: (Word of caution... We hear you may find the free-wheeling hippie type bathing in their birthday suits.) https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/hot-springs-canyon-trail

Great short hike in Montecito. Most trails throughout the SB foothills snake in many different directions and join with other trails so you can hike for as long or as short as you like. The main loop is about 3.8 miles. Great views of incredible Montecito homes, SB foothills, and the ocean.

Walk on the beach to breakfast.

This is one of the most unique and memorable experiences you can have while staying at The Captain's Cottage. If the tide is 3 feet or less, you can take a gorgeous walk on the sand a little less than 2 miles each way to Hendry's Boathouse. Check the tide at the link below or text me. They get quite busy, so call ahead; and if the wait is over an hour, you can drive over, put your name in, drive back, then walk back on the sand. Your table should be ready when you get there, just don't forget the buzzer they give you. https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/california/santa-barbara-ca/tides/

Bike Adventure to Carpinteria

Bikers of all levels will have a day to remember on a ride along the coast from The Captain's Cottage to Carpinteria. 15 miles each way or time the Amtrak and catch a ride back on the train for a one-way trip. Look at the map and make your own route but mostly just hug the coast and you will find the bike paths along the way. Padaro Beach Grill makes for a great turn-around point and a memorable lunch on the sand. Be sure to check out all the cute shops in Montecito and Summerland, and you may even find a secret beach or two. For avid bikers, the trail now extends all the way to Ventura.

Tar on Santa Barbara’s Beaches

While Santa Barbara’s incredible beaches are beautiful and make for a relaxing beach day, please do keep an eye out for tar. After all, Jack Johnson’s famous song “Bubble Toes” is a reference to tar in SB! The cottage’s outdoor shower is perfect for washing off any tar that may collect on your feet during a walk on the beach. You are also welcome to use the tar removal solution we keep stored on the shower bench.
