Pro tip - if you're with a group of people and cannot decide on what to eat or do, go to Armature Works! We've done this ourselves many times with guests in town and it's worked out so well. There are multiple restaurants inside, a bar, coffee bar, the best outdoor seating on the Hillsborough River downtown and outdoor games for the whole family. At the epicenter of The Heights neighborhood development project, Armature Works is a mixed-use commercial building consisting of Heights Public Market, multiple event spaces, co-shared workspace as well as multiple waterfront restaurants and bars. Once known as Tampa Electric’s streetcar warehouse, Armature Works dates back to 1910 and has since gone through a complete modern restoration. To keep the historical feel of this downtown Tampa landmark, many of the original materials have been recycled. Today, you will see original features such as exposed brick walls, skylights, original windows and doors and even the wood planks taken from the ceilings have been repurposed and used to form wood floors. The Heights development plans bring life, excitement and community to Tampa’s Downtown Riverfront. You can reach this unique destination by boat, bike, car or via the extended Tampa Riverwalk! https://www.armatureworks.com/ Breakfast Lunch Dinner Brunch Outdoor Dining Private/Group Room Full Facility Rental Available Major Credit Cards Accepted Live Entertainment/Dancing Pets Allowed Number of Restaurants on site: 17 Live Entertainment Self Park Self Parking Charge Valet Parking Valet Parking Charge Watersport Rentals

Steeped in the unique culture and history of Tampa, Florida, Cigar City Brewing began handcrafting award-winning beer in 2009. Cigar City Brewing’s ales and lagers bring to mind the sun and citrus for which Florida is known, while taking cues from the cigar industry upon which Tampa was built. Behind all of Cigar City Brewing’s liquid is the philosophy that quality is achieved by giving first rate ingredients to first rate people in a space where they are free to pursue their passion. https://www.cigarcitybrewing.com/tasting-room/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=Yext

We always bring out of town visitors to Datz. The vibe is fun, they have fun food that you’d want to try when on vacation (like The Grilled Cheese Burger Monkey Bread) and they have a dessert place next door. It’s a no brainer. 🍔🍩🥗

We love our Zoo in Tampa. It really is one of the best we've been to. I've also volunteered at the zoo and spent some time "behind the scenes" and fell in love even more. Voted Best Kids Attraction in Tampa Magazine’s Best of South Tampa 2021 awards. Five-time winner of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence (2010-2015), ZooTampa at Lowry Park is one of the most popular zoos in the southeastern US, with close to 1 million visitors annually. The Zoo originated in the 1930’s as a municipal department with a small number of Florida native species. It grew gradually throughout the next four decades, but struggled to meet the developing professional standards of modern zoos. In 1982, community leaders created the Lowry Park Zoo Association to take over management of the Zoo for the City of Tampa with the goal of creating a world-class zoo through a public-private partnership. The Association then became the Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, Inc., as it remains today. Working with a national zoo designer, the Society was able to create a modern, 24-acre facility that opened to the public in 1988 and shortly after earned Accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). ZooTampa has now grown to what now encompasses 56 acres of naturalistic animal exhibits in a lush, tropical garden setting. The Zoo offers popular educational programming, fun recreational amenities, up-close animal encounters and engaging seasonal events for which it has won accolades as one of the country’s most family-friendly zoos. https://zootampa.org/

Located in downtown Tampa and St. Petersburg, Urban Kai Stand Up Paddle Board Shop offers a wide range of SUP equipment, training, private lessons, and adventure tours in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area. Stand up paddle boarding is the latest low-impact fitness phenonenon, as well as a fun and exhilarating way to get in top physical condition. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to walk on water, SUP is the sport for you. Balancing on a board (ranging between 9-14 feet) works your core muscles, while paddling tones every muscle through your arms, legs, abdominals and back. Additionally, exercising outdoors lets you enjoy hours of peace and quiet as you take in the beautiful scenery around you. Our students are usually hooked after just one class. From watching the sunset and feeling the calm sea breeze on your face to observing the amazing marine life pass underneath you, it's hard not to love paddle boarding. We think one of our customers said it best: “Stand Up Paddle Boarding is so rewarding when I get to see dolphins, stingrays, even turtles during my daily exercise.” (Emily Ghosh). If you're ready to experience a solid workout that gives you amazing results, peace of mind, and a closer connection to nature, call the experts at Urban Kai today. With two convenient locations to serve you (in Tampa and St. Petersburg), along with a crew of friendly, knowledgeable staff members, our goal is to provide you with unbeatable fitness workouts and unforgettable SUP adventures! https://www.urbankai.com/

Whether you are sitting on the beach or kayaking near the still water's edge at Fort De Soto, you find yourself absorbed in the abundance of natural beauty for as far as the eye can see. The complexity of the ecology is not immediately apparent, but the park offers the greatest diversity of systems just about anywhere. Emerging from the wealth of bird life, sea life, wild life and plant life is the majestic tapestry called Fort De Soto. The largest park within the Pinellas County Park System, Fort De Soto park consists of 1,136 acres made up of five interconnected islands (keys). These keys are home to beach plants, mangroves, wetlands, palm hammocks, hardwoods and scores of native plants. Each of these species plays a vital role in the preservation and protection of the natural environment. Another amazing example of the importance of the park's natural ecosystems is the more than 328 species of birds that have been documented over 60 years by ornithologists. New species are being added every year. The beach also provides refuge to the loggerhead sea turtle, which nests between April and September. https://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_ft_desoto.htm

One of our favorite local beaches! I almost don't want to share this one with you ;) Lay of the Land: A throwback to old Florida, Indian Rocks Beach features beautiful dune-lined expanse dotted with small motels, vacation cottages and rental condos. After a hard day of sunbathing, relax at some of the best local restaurants in the area or browse several small shops in this historic hamlet. Little Known Facts: Legend has it that Indian Rocks Beach got its name when a native medicine man brought his ailing chief to bathe in and drink the water at a local sulfur spring encircled by rocks. In the early 20th century all the roads on the beaches were composed of shell and sand, and some of them still exist today. Why You Should Go: Nostalgia. It's the beach that your grandparents took your parents to for vacation. https://www.visitstpeteclearwater.com/profile/indian-rocks-beach/139503

Arts + Culture

The Dalí Museum (St. Petersburg, Florida) has been the unofficial heart of fine arts in the Tampa Bay area since its opening in 1982. The debut of the new building in January 2011 has contributed to the cultural renaissance – a movement that has experienced an explosion of artistic institutions and outlets that both residents and visitors to the destination can enjoy. The Dalí Museum celebrates the life and art of the influential and innovative artist, Salvador Dalí. The Tampa Museum of Art opened its award-winning new home in 2010 with a commitment to providing innovative public programs with a strong focus on classical, modern, and contemporary art. The Museum balances a growing collection, including one of the largest Greek and Roman antiquities collections in the southeastern United States, with a dynamic annual schedule of special exhibitions. It is the region’s largest museum devoted to art of our time and has built a reputation for embracing contemporary photography and new media; most notably, Leo Villareal’s Sky (Tampa), the 14,000-square-foot LED installation on the Museum’s south façade, has become an iconic image for Tampa. Since its founding in 1979, the Museum has been dedicated to providing quality education to students and adults, with more than half of its programs offered free of charge. The Museum is home to Sono Café, a Slow Food movement café overlooking the Hillsborough River, and has emerged as Tampa’s premier venue for special events. https://tampamuseum.org/

As early as the 1980’s – just a few years into the SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In – founding director Billy Henderson and others envisioned an aviation museum to anchor the campus and provide a year-round educational and historic presence. Founded in 1920, the Tampa Museum of Art inspires the residents of the Tampa Bay region and others around the world by providing engaging exhibitions and innovative educational programs that emphasize ancient, modern, and contemporary art. The museum houses one of the largest Greek and Roman antiquities collections in the southeastern United States. As one of the region’s largest museums devoted to the art of our time, the museum’s permanent collection also embraces sculpture, photography, painting, new media, and more. New online programs add to the year-round studio art classes, lectures, and tours that provide children, teens, and adults with opportunities to discover new perspectives and learn different art-making techniques. Likewise, through unique community partnerships, the museum offers outreach programs that provide art-therapy-informed interventions and meaningful modes of self-expression to vulnerable segments of the population. Located in the heart of downtown Tampa, next to the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Tampa’s Riverwalk, the Tampa Museum of Art leads as both a cultural institution and a community museum dedicated to celebrating the diversity of its home city. https://tampamuseum.org/

Built in 1926, the Tampa Theatre is one of America’s most elaborate movie palaces and a beloved community landmark. Visitors to the Theatre enjoy world-class entertainment under a realistic night sky with twinkling stars, in a romantic Mediterranean courtyard replete with old-world statues, flowers, and gargoyles. Like other movie palaces around the country, Tampa Theatre was enormously popular when it opened. For the first time in history, the common person had access to opulence — for 25 cents! But by the 1960s, times had changed. The rise of television and migration to the suburbs had a profound impact on the movie palaces that lit up America’s main streets. Audiences dwindled, costs rose, and many of our nation’s finest movie palaces were demolished. In 1973, Tampa Theatre faced the same fate. But Tampa’s citizens rallied. Committees and community leaders got involved, and soon reached a deal with the City to rescue the Theatre. Today, the Theatre is managed by the not-for-profit Tampa Theatre Foundation. As one of the most heavily utilized venues of its kind in the United States, Tampa Theatre’s single auditorium hosts more than 600 events each year, including a full schedule of first-run and classic films, concerts, special events, corporate events, tours and educational programs. https://tampatheatre.org/

Pro tip - these factory tours are so popular that the book up far in advance, so we suggest planning ahead. Founded in 1895 by Julius Caeser Newman, J.C. Newman Cigar Company is the oldest family-owned premium cigar maker in America. For four generations and 125 years, J.C. Newman has been handcrafting many of the world’s finest cigars. J.C. Newman is headquartered in an iconic 110-year-old cigar factory in the Ybor City National Historic Landmark District in Tampa, Florida. At this factory, known as “El Reloj,” J.C. Newman rolls premium cigars both by hand and by hand-operated, antique cigar machines. The J.C. Newman PENSA cigar factory is the second largest in Nicaragua and is where Brick House, Perla del Mar, El Baton, and Quorum cigars are hand rolled. J.C. Newman’s Diamond Crown, MAXIMUS, Julius Caeser, and Black Diamond cigars are handmade by Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic. With its longtime partners the Arturo Fuente family, the Newmans founded the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, which supports low-income families in the Dominican Republic with education, health care, vocational training, and clean water. https://www.jcnewman.com/

We love the streetcars! Such a fun way to hop around Ybor and Channelside | Water Street Tampa. In their heyday, Tampa’s streetcars whisked passengers to and from Ybor City, Ballast Point, Hyde Park, Sulphur Springs and points beyond. Operated by uniformed conductors, the Birney cars were a welcome sight, and the familiar clang of the streetcar bell was music to the passenger’s ears. To ride the streetcar was to feel the pulse of the community. Tampa’s first electric streetcar lines built in 1892 quickly became an essential part of everyday life as workers took the streetcar downtown and to the cigar factories of west Tampa. And families climbed aboard for a picnic or ball game in DeSoto and Macfarlane parks. Reaching the peak of its popularity in the 1920s, with almost 24 million passengers in 1926, Tampa’s streetcar system rolled to a stop in August 1946 following World War II as it was largely replaced by automobiles and buses. Beginning in 1984, the Tampa & Ybor City Street Railway Society (TYCSRS) acted as a catalyst, promoting the return of streetcar service to Tampa. In October 2002, electric streetcars started operating again in Tampa, supporting expansive growth in downtown, the Channel District, and Ybor City; improving transportation capacity and shared parking capabilities (specifically related to the traffic peaks caused by large events); supporting Tampa’s cruise and tourism industry; and to the degree possible, transporting workers to and from their jobs. http://www.tecolinestreetcar.org/

Two thousand and twenty-one marks the Yankees' 26th Season in Tampa. For over a quarter-century, some of baseball's biggest stars have trained at George M. Steinbrenner Field and called Tampa their second home. Built in 1996, George M. Steinbrenner Field is a 31-acre complex centrally located in Tampa, Florida and serves as spring home to the New York Yankees, and summer home to the Yankees class A-Advanced affiliate Tampa Tarpons. Steinbrenner Field is also a year-round special events venue hosting concerts, baseball tournaments, corporate events, and more. The complex was renamed for the Yankees' longtime Principal Owner on March 27, 2008, following two unanimous resolutions supporting the change issued by the Hillsborough County Commission and the Tampa City Council. The resolutions cited Mr. Steinbrenner's many charitable donations to youth activities, hospitals and the arts, and recognized his numerous extraordinary contributions to the area. https://www.mlb.com/yankees/spring-training/ballpark

The sunken gardens is one of our favorite gardens in the area. It's a great size, close to many restaurants and shops and close to the home. We personally love to learn about horticulture and local gardens, so this is perfect if you do, too. In 1911, a plumber by the name of George Turner, Sr. purchased the six acres that would become a world-famous botanical attraction. Using an elaborate maze of clay tiles, he drained what was left of an ancient lake on the property, leaving a nutrient rich muck soil that was ideal for his favorite hobby – gardening. Neighbors so enjoyed strolling through Mr. Turner's garden, that by the early 1920's, he was charging a nickel for tours. His wife, Eula Blanton, was an avid naturalist and played an important role in establishing the gardens as an event venue. Three generations of the Turner family continued the vision that created this unique tropical garden with flowing ponds. The City of St. Petersburg purchased Sunken Gardens in 1999 with funds from a voter approved tax. Preserving the garden was a community effort. With Mr. Turner Sr.'s original vision in mind, the city's goal is to preserve this historic botanical garden and provide cultural and educational opportunities. https://www.stpete.org/visitors/sunken_gardens.php
