Guide for Grendon

Days out

Castle Ashby is the stately home and estate village of Lord Northampton. The village is very pretty to wander round, with an artisan shopping yard with a fantastic deli also serving coffees and light snacks. The Castle itself is not open to the public, but the gardens are lovely. There's a cafe, childrens play area and menagerie. The Falcon is a recently refurbished luxury bar and restaurant situated on the village green. Booking may be necessary for the Eyas restaurant if you're looking for something special, or the East Wing bar is a lovey place to pop in for a cocktail and light snacks too. There is a public footpath across the fields from Grendon, the walk is just over a mile, and should take around 20-30 minutes each way.

Irchester Country Park is a great place to visit for families. There's a large adventure playground, and lots of trails and hidden play equipment to explore in the forest, with well marked trails and paths. Parking costs around £4 for the day. There's a small cafe and kiosk for snacks and drinks. Be aware there's no bins around the forest, so you'll need to be ready to take your litter home if you take a picnic!

Sywell is a reservoir with a lovely 2/3 mile loop walk around the water. There's a children's play area and cafe and it's very well maintained and clean. Parking is around £3-4 for the day. It can get quite busy on weekends, so it's best to go early or late in the day.

Neighbourhoods

Grendon is a historic village, with a mixture of old and new houses, and lots of footpaths through the countryside to explore. The Half Moon pub is situated on the main rd through the village on the hill below the church, and is a traditional country pub serving beers, wines and spirits. During the day, The Buttery Cafe operates from the pub premises serving light meals and sandwiches. Grendon Hall is a large historic house and venue at the bottom of the hill leaving the village, which serves food and drinks and often has special events and offers on. It has large grassy gardens which are a great place to sit on a sunny summer evening. The best way to find out what's on is to look up their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/GrendonH/ There's a children's playing field in the centre of the village just above the schoolyard. There is no shop in the village itself. There is a co-op in nearby Wollaston (approx 5 minute drive) and Earls Barton (approx 7 minute drive) for essentials. The nearest big supermarket is Tesco in Wellingborough. There are two good pubs in Yardley Hastings (2 miles away, a couple of minutes drive) The Rose and Crown, and The Red Lion, both serving good food. For takeaway food, we recommend The Four Pillars in Olney for fantastic Indian, although you usually have to pick this up in person rather than delivery. Aramintas in Yardley Hastings do deliver to Grendon, and are also pretty good. There's a chinese takeaway in Wollaston next to the co-op, although again this is pick up rather than delivery most of the time. The market town of Olney is about 8 miles to the south, and has some lovely independent shops, restaurants and a market on Thursdays. We recommend The Cherry Tree and The Bulls Head for good food, both situated on the market place. Rushden Lakes on the A45 is a big leisure complex with cinemas, trampoline park, indoor climbing, lots of shops and restaurants like Wagamama and Pizza Express. It's about 15 minutes drive from Grendon.
