Located in the rocky Dinara Alps, on the second highest peak 1,675 meters above sea level, the park is home to the mausoleum of former Montenegrin ruler Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. Housed in a marble chapel, up 461 steps, is a winged granite eagle bearing his remains. Above it, 200,000 gilded tiles create a dazzling gold ceiling. Views from here are dazzling and dizzying. Tip: Nearby Njeguši village, birthplace of the Petrovic dynasty, is the place to indulge in divine home-made cheese and prosciutto smoked hams, made the local way.

Perast is one of the best-preserved towns on the entire Adriatic coast. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, but unlike Kotor and Budva, it isn’t walled. It opens directly onto the water. Venetian-era palaces, squares and churches are beautifully preserved as reminders of Perat’s golden age as a trading port and maritime training centre. Perast’s history and unique local culture – combined with its breathtaking location, compact size and the fact that the harbour is too small for cruise liners – makes it one of the most charming destinations in Montenegro and Bay of Kotor.

Central Montenegro isn’t just easy on the eye, it’s also bountiful in flora and fauna. The waters of Lake Skadar are shared between Montenegro and Albania, but the richest, marshiest part of the lake lies on the Montenegrin side. Skadar is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, covering an area of over 500 square-kilometres. Despite its size, it’s a true hidden gem in Europe that has somehow managed to avoid the limelight. It’s a nesting ground for endemic and migratory birds (more than 280 bird species in total). On the other side of the lake, the Albanian city of Skadar is the gateway to the Accursed Mountains. Lake Skadar looks incredible from afar, which is why you must stop at the Pavlova Strana viewpoint near the cute town of Rijeka Crnojevića for a panorama of the marshes and the waterway’s horseshoe bend.

The ancient coastal town of Ulcinj is unlike any other place in Montenegro. Tucked away on the south-eastern coast – a world away from Kotor bay – Ulcinj has a very local feel and is vastly more popular among domestic tourists than international visitors. This is where you’ll find the country’s most beautiful beaches (the only white sandy beaches in Montenegro): Long Beach, Small Beach and Sapore di Mare among them. More secluded coves and quiet stretches of shore can be found away from the centre. Home to Montenegro’s largest Albanian community, Ulcinj boasts more than two dozen mosques. The Museum of Local History is a great visit for learning about the town’s past – which goes all the way back to the 5th century BC. To get a feel for modern-day life, head straight to the vibrant produce market. Ulcinj Castle, one of the area’s most famous landmarks, stands sentinel over the town and beaches and offers beautiful views of the sea.

Agrotourism in Montenegro also offers cultural tourism, which is a specific form of tourism that includes visits of tourists outside their permanent place of residence motivated by the interests of culture including history, arts, heritage and lifestyle of people in a locality or a region. This is a traditional stone village dating back almost two hundred years, but until recently it was in ruins. Local witnesses still living and contribute to the additional fascination of this place. When you want to rest and relaxe in a quiet and rural setting, high in the hills, this village is the perfect option for you and for your kids. It’s traditionally built stone village has been restored with love and it creates six country-style apartments with modern features and a beautiful view. Each object is located on one of three levels and is connected by a series of small stone steps and paths dotted with flower beds of local varieties of plants and flowers. In the gardens lives mostly birds - parrots and turtles, which certainly contribute to rural themes here. During hot summer days, a swimming pool is located on the ground floor at the entrance to the villagen and it is ideal for rest and relaxation. Light snacks and drinks are served at the pool. You can also enjoy wandering through the olive groves of private owners, take a mountain bike to further destinations, or jump into your rental car and go to the coast of the idyllic village of Rose, which is only 4 km.

Kotor Old Town - a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a living breathing museum. The rabbit warren Old Town is a showcase of crumbling churches, Venetian-inspired architecture where the palazzo of wealthy seamen dot the shores. The best way to experience Kotor is by ambling along the cobbled streets in the early morning before the crowds arrive. Climb up to St. John’s (either via the official trail or via the Ladder of Kotor) for a birds-eye view of the rooftops and turquoise bay beyond. Kicking off every morning bright and early at 7am, Kotor Food Market is one of the first places to open on the seafront. It’s the domain of locals and a good place for a wander if you’re looking for a more ‘authentic’ Kotor experience. With both undercover and open-air sections, the market opens directly onto the waterfront. The main entrance can be found near the Sea Gate. Vendors sell fruit, vegetables, cheese, dried fruit, small-batch wine and homemade rakija (brandy) – perfect supplies for a bayside picnic. If you find yourself visiting Kotor in the warmer months, you will really be yearning for a swim to cool down from the hot sun. If you’re willing to travel a bit further, there are a few larger beaches nearby that are more suitable for swimming. Trsteno Beach near Budva runs for 200m along the Adriatic Coast and can be reached in 30 minutes by road from Kotor. It’s the best of the bunch, with fine sand, clear waters and lush nature nearby.

The Tara River Canyon is one of the largest and deepest canyons not just in the Balkans countries, but in all of Europe. The waterway flows down from Bosnia and Herzegovina where it forms a natural border between the two countries, then opens up into a gorge just outside the Montenegrin town of Zabljak. In late spring and summer, visitors descend on Tara Canyon to go whitewater rafting. The most beautiful spot along the gorge is Đurđevića Bridge. Constructed in 1940 when Montenegro was part of Yugoslavia, it was the largest concrete arched bridge in Europe at the time. Just a few short years later, during WWII, the bridge was almost completely destroyed in an effort to prevent the Italian advance (incredibly, one of the engineers responsible for the design was involved in the plot to bring it down). Rebuilt in 1946, the arches beautifully mirror the rolling mountains beyond.

Biogradska Gora, the smallest of the National Parks, is one of only a handful of primeval forests left in Europe. Virgin tracts of jungle, centuries-old trees, soaring glacial lakes, tall mountains and wildlife grace the inland park. But the highlight is Lake Biograd, shrouded in foliage, with its still waters mirroring the lush rugged surrounds. Popular activities include mountaineering, skiing, camping, trekking, four-by-fouring and mountain biking. As light hits the waters, it refracts emitting a luminous shade of blue, giving the Blue Grotto its name. Swimming or boating in these vibrant waters feels magical. Blue Grotto is on cruise ship itineraries, so summers can get busy. Tip: Visit during off-peak time where possible, when there's nothing better than grabbing an oar and kayaking into the nine-meter tall cave, without the hefty summer tourist throngs.

Located in the north-eastern corner of Montenegro close to Kosovo and the Albanian border, Prokletije National Park is the country’s newest protected area, having only been designated a national park in 2009. It covers one of the most stunning parts of the Balkans, the Dinaric Alps mountain range, and some of the best hiking trails in the entire country. This park transcends borders, extending into Albania where it joins up with two more national parks, Valbona and Theth. A great way to explore the terrain and enjoy spectacular views is by walking the 200km Peaks of the Balkans, a marked loop hike that leads you through the three countries. Shorter day treks are also on offer to introduce you to Prokletije’s incredible biodiversity: This park is home to half of Montenegro’s native flora. Walk to stunning alpine Hridsko Lake, cool off in the fresh water at Ali-Pasha’s Springs, and discover historic towers and churches, some of which date back to the 15th century, along the way.
