Parks & Nature

Rouvas Forest is a key ecosystem, based on an oak forest – it is of national importance. Covering the inland slopes of Psiloritis, it is defined by the peaks of Ambelakia and Samari to the south, Chalazokephala to the west, Skinaka and Koudouni to the north and Gyristi to the east. The forest covers some 30,000 stremmata (7400 acres). The trees growing here have attained a great age: the trunk diameters are more than a metre wide, and they grow to 15 m high. They grow so thickly that they form a proper bio-system of a forest with many shrubby types to fill out the ranks of vegetation. With them are other species typical for such an environment – holm oak, mock-privet, maple, cypress, pine,

The gorge is 18 kilometres long and its width varies between 150 and 3-4 metres at its narrowest point, which is known as Sideroportes. In the past, the gorge often served as a refuge for local people, who would run to it to escape massacre, during periods of foreign occupation; in 1770, thousands of Sfakian women and children fled there after the Daskalogiannis Revolt. The walk down the gorge begins at Xiloskalo, in Omalós (at an altitude of 1.200 metres) usually, logically, quite early in the morning, since it requires 4-8 hours, depending on the walking pace.

To get there you must either cross the gorge, by easy hiking of about 25-50’, or catch a boat from Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pirgos or Kali Limenes. We definitely recommend the first option, as the route within the vertical walls of the gorge is breathtaking.
