Riverside is a little pocket of the city sandwiched between East Chinatown and Leslieville. This gentrified corner of the east has plenty of cultural and culinary highlights. Fans of TV teen melodrama, take note: Riverside is the neighbourhood in which the world-famous Degrassi series was all set—De Grassi Street itself is a typically quaint and quiet example of a Toronto residential street lined with pretty Victorian houses. Don't miss: Toronto’s first craft cider brewery, Brickworks Ciderhouse. Try the streetcar-inspired Queen Street 501, its popular, semi-sweet flagship. Seeing a concert at The Opera House. The Edwardian vaudeville-style venue has hosted the likes of Maroon 5 and Travis Scott. Taste test classic French pastries (like galette des rois and kouign amann) or chewy sourdough bread at Blackbird Baking Co.

Named after the cabbages Irish settlers would plant in their front yards, Cabbagetown has a long history of being a low income neighbourhood. After scarcely avoiding the fate of neighbouring Regent Park and St James Town and being redeveloped as housing projects, the area has been experiencing a cultural and economic boom since the 1970s. Today, it is home to white collar workers, artists, and the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in all of North America. Perhaps because of this, there are several antique and home decor shops in the area as well as amazing restaurants and even an urban farm.

A collection of 47 19th-century buildings that once comprised the Gooderham & Worts Distillery is now a major dining, shopping, and cultural hub in Toronto aptly called the Distillery District. Strolling through the neighborhood’s brick-paved pedestrian streets, visitors might feel as if they’ve been transported to Victorian-era Canada—the craftspeople who restored the old structures kept true to the original construction materials as much as possible. And while there are still breweries and distilleries here (including the Spirit of York Distillery and the Mill St. Brew Pub), there are also restaurants, locally-owned boutiques, and art galleries.
