This is the most famous pedestrian area in the entire Belgrade, leading straight into one of its most beloved attractions – the Kalemegdan park and fortress. It is the main walking street in Belgrade so naturally many high quality shops, cafes and restaurants can be found lining it. The area is always bustling with life and there is always something interesting to be seen such as street performances, museum exhibitions or gatherings which usually take place in Republic square near the very beginning of Knez Mihajlova. It is also a great starting point for any tourist looking to get to know Belgrade as there is a tourist information office near Terazije square and also many tours of the city begin right here. Interesting buildings include: the old-town style block of private homes, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Greek Queen (one of the oldest preserved cafes in the center of Belgrade), Russian emperor (also an old-town style restaurant), Nikola Spasic endowment and passage, hotels Russia and Srpska Kruna, Goethe institute, Instituto Cervantes, Alliance francaise and many others.

This is an extremely unique district in Belgrade which strives to preserve the old-town ‘Bohemian’ spirit. It is located close to the National theatre and back in the day it used to be the gathering place for primarily artists of all branches – actors, poets, painters, performers and all other artistically inclined professions. The Skadarlija street is not only beautiful and preserving in the old-town spirit, but also a home to some of Belgrade’s most well-known restaurants and hotels. Quite regularly this is the place to see music bands dressed in traditional Serbian garments playing brass instruments and traditional urban music.

Kalemegdan Fort is universally known as the ‘heart of Belgrade’ and with good reason. There was a point in history where the words ‘defending Belgrade’ related only to the small area encircled within the walls of this fort which still stand today, even though its foundation was erected by the ancient Roman legions. This area was the last line of defense against any conquering forces thanks to its strategic position right on top of the confluence of two large rivers – Sava and Danube. Today this area represents many things to many people. It is a popular recreational area, it is a popular hangout, it is a beautiful outlook spot and it is brimming with history. Just by taking a walk on the walls of the fort you will discover monuments and museums every step of the way while enjoying the beautiful view of the two rivers below. The fort had been conquered and re-conquered, destroyed and rebuilt several times over the course of history.

Places to visit

Some places which we recommend that are interesting to see.
This museum came into being around an idea of collecting and preserving valuable art pieces that were created in modern times, in the 20th and 21st century. The museum stands in a beautiful area of the city, near Sava river and just opposite from the Belgrade fort. Prior to the museum’s grand opening, Miodrag Protic, the founder and the man in charge of its exhibitions spent several years of his life in Paris and New York for the specific purpose of touring the galleries there in search of inspiration for the Contemporary art museum back home. Taking notes from the most famous galleries in the cities he visited, Protic organized the museum into separate exhibitions for different creative techniques – painting, graphics, sculpting, as well as a section which contains documentation and a studio for restoration and conservation.

Today one of the largest and well-maintained parks in Belgrade, Tasmajdan (or Tas as it’s lovingly known by the people of Belgrade) is located near the church of St. Marco and just off one of the largest streets in Belgrade, the King Alexander’s boulevard. There is much to do here – visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk, jogging and cycling enthusiasts can make use of special tracks for those activities, there is a children’s playground with many interesting activities for kids to enjoy, you can try your hand at gigantic chess, sit by one of the huge fountains with a book, enjoy a light-show and a performance in the evening and if you have a canine companion there is a special, fenced-off dog park where dogs can run around off the leash, free and happy. In the broader sense of the name, “Tasmajdan” includes a much larger area than just the park. It stretches all the way between the streets Ilija Garasanin and 27th March up to Belgrade and Carnegie streets. All in all, this is a great area to spend free time and yet still be near all the important transportation connections in case you need to hurry off somewhere.

This small but unique museum is located very close to the Nikola Tesla airport in Belgrade, about a 5-min walk from the airport’s main terminal. The building has a very unique, glass design and offers a number of interesting attractions and exhibits. Most notably, the museum owns a collection of aircrafts which were previously owned by the Yugoslav Air Force as well as wreckages of USA F-117 Nighthawk and F-16 Fighting Falcon which were shot down during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. Additionally the museum has a vast collection of reference books, documents, photographs, radars, missiles, miscellaneous aeronautical equipment and other items on display. It is an interesting location to visit, not only for aviation enthusiasts but for anyone interested in learning something new.

Avala is a small mountain overlooking Belgrade and is one of the most popular and beloved picnicking areas of the city. One interesting fact is that this miniature mountain is exactly 511 meters tall, which means it managed to “escape” being categorized as a hill by only 11 meters. Avala is a location of great historic significance – it is riddled with monuments, including Monument to the Unknown Hero, Monument to the Soviet war veterans and many others located in the memorial park. Visitors can also enjoy many tourist-friendly locations here, including a resort, a hotel, mountaineering camps, an ethno-camp, the famous landmark Avala Tower and many other beautiful locations. It is the perfect place to enjoy nature and a breathtaking panoramic view of Belgrade. Due to its proximity to the city, this is a popular destination for mountaineering enthusiasts and the mountaineering camp in Avala offers many types of activities including orienteering, mountain biking and running and climbing (using a climbing wall).
