I always suggest to use your own debit card to tap in and out when using public transports, it is the same concept of the Oyster card but it might be cheaper and not more expensive.

Do not take cash!
I don’t recommend to have cash just because London is a city where all the shops accept card payments but might refuse to take cash, so my suggestion is to have no more than £100 and you still might end up to take home some British pounds
