Food Scene

Make a reservation for dinner or take your chances on a table in the bar. After dinner, move outside to an adirondack chair next to one of the fire pits and roast marshmallows. The restauant will give families a S'mores kit. Great wine. Great steaks.

Take a drive around the lake, clockwise. After visiting South Shore (take the tram up Heavenly), view Emerald Bay and keep driving up the west side to Sunnyside. It's one of our favorite spots for outdoor dining on the lake.

When you want to order a good salad for take-out, this is the place. Our favorites are the Southwest Salad and the Cobb Salad. Each one is a complete meal. It's a real locals place.

Arts & Culture

This is one of the best ways to spend an evening at the lake. From July through August, enjoy a live production, outside at beautiful Sand Harbor. Just be sure to bring layers as it gets cold as the sun goes down.

Parks & Nature

This is a secret gem that no one seems to know about. It’s operated by the Forest Service. It has some of the nicest (and easy) walking trails along the lake, through wetlands to the lake. Also, they diverted part of the creek and created an aquarium for visitors to see the fish that live in the area. It’s really cool and totally off the regular tourist path. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is located approximately 3 miles north of South Lake Tahoe on the lake side of Highway 89. The Visitor Center entrance is just past the entrance to the Tallac Historic Site and Fallen Leaf Lake Road

From South Lake Tahoe, head up Hwy 50 and follow the signs up Echo Summit to Echo Lake. Echo Lake is off the main highway. When you get to Echo Lake, take the one boat service to the other end of the lake. Many hikers take the boat across and then head into Desolation for some serious back-packing. You can just enjoy the boat across the lake, admire all the wonderful cottages a fortunate few have been able hold on to for generations and then, if you’re up to it, hike back along the lake to where you originally caught the boat. Be sure to take a picnic in a backpack and plenty of water. It’s a gorgeous high sierra adventure, but a very easy, flat walk back.

Ehrman Mansion is worth a tour. Lots of hiking trails to enjoy. Great for a picnic. One of our favorite piers on the lake. At times during the summer, kayaks and stand-up paddle can be rented here.

This alone is worth the drive around the lake. Park your car and hike down to the Vikingsholm and take a tour through the house that used to be privately owned. Very big tourist destination. Truly, a “must see”. If you're interested in exploring the island in the middle of Emerald Bay, you have a number of options. You can rent a boat and pilot (from Tahoe Keys, Camp Richardson or at Tahoe City). Also, at times during the summer, kayaks and SUP can be rented in the area (at campgrounds on the bay and near the Vikingsholm). It's a very short climb up to the "tea house" at the top, but worth the effort.

Entertainment & Activities

In the winter, this is a great place to ski. It has some of the best views and because of its elevation, it often has more snow than other areas. In the summer, take the tram up the mountain for a spectacular view. At the top of the mountain is an adventurer's playground, complete with ropes courses, mountain roller coaster, a climbing wall and zip lines. Reservations are recommended for many of the activities

In the winter, this is a great place to ski. This is our resort of choice when the wind closes down other ski resorts (such as Squaw Valley). The trees provide fairly good protection from the wind. Lots of long gentle slopes for those who like blues and plenty of tree skiing and some steep runs for those who like blacks. In the summer, there are many fun options in the village (roller skating, yes it’s really fun) and take the gondola up to the top of the mountain for some spectacular hiking trails. Mountain bikers love this place in the summer.

We have booked a trip with them every summer -- kayak trips, Stand-Up Paddle trips, trips to Thunderbird Lodge. All are excellent and take the hassle out of lugging around equipment. On Tuesdays, they run a kayak trip to Thunderbird Lodge, a castle on the lake, once owned by a reclusive character.

At the “Y” in Tahoe City, there are at least two raft companies. Either one is fine for enjoying a leisurely float down the Truckee River. It's usually very tame. You can just float down – without paddling a bit – in about two hours. Then stop and have a drink or dine outside at River Ranch before catching the bus back up to your car.

Yes, there's a Starbucks in Incline. Generally, the community doesn't allow retail chains, but they permitted this one Starbucks. So, for those of you in need, it's just a quick drive or 10 minute walk from the condo.
