In the beautiful off-grid ecovillage of Los Molinos del Río Aguas, our lively international community works and learns together to develop, demonstrate, research and communicate alternative ways of living more sustainably. Living free of mainstream connections to water and electricity, the community is also a hardworking hotbed of green-minded experimentalism, creating everything from geodesic dome structures to bike-powered washing machines and Fender-style guitars made from sustainably sourced agave cactus.

When the weekend rolls around and it's winter in Spain we tend to use the sunny days to get out and about - a breath or ten of fresh air before we need to light that log fire. If you're holidaying in Andalucía over the winter period - take a trip down to Almería. Not for a city visit, but to the scenic Cabo de Gata. It's a familiar picture in a different frame at this time of year - devoid of tourists and with the scenic coastline dressed in different clothes. Bring your walking boots and your binoculars, and try a winter afternoon in the Cabo de Gata on for size. And your camera of course, where you can capture some of the iconic images of the area for yourself.

La Alcazaba, built in the tenth century by Caliph Abd- al-Rhaman III dominates the skyline, and can be seen from any part of the city. This formidable military fortification has three huge walled enclosures. The first compound is the largest of the three and was originally designed as a military camp and a place for refuge for the public when the city came under siege.A well in the centre could draw water from a depth of 70 metres. Today the area has been transformed into a lush garden. The second compound was once the heart of the structure and housed Moorish kings, when resident in the city. Closed on monday. Gratis

A quaint village that fulfils the traditional Andalucian image, narrow streets and whitewashed housesThe mountainside village of Lucainena lies at approximately 550m above sea level, situated just outside the perimeter of the Sierra Alhamilla natural park in a little world all of its own. The village is located along the AL-102 and can be approached from either the main AP-7 motorway, or the N-340a Sorbas to Tabernas road. While the first option offers the most rewarding views, since it takes a winding route up the side of the mountains, a head for heights is certainly necessary, access from the Sorbas to Tabernas bypass provides a scenic yet much less dramatic way to reach the village. .

Mojacar Pueblo, a whitewashed hilltop village with a picture book setting, nestles in the foothills of the Mojacar hilltop village Sierra Cabrera mountain range overlooking the beach resort of Mojacar Playa where the Mediterranean sea washes onto a seventeen - kilometre coastline of uncrowded sandy beaches. The town, however, still remains remarkably true to its Moorish past. Mojacar is a place that begs to be explored by foot. Park the car below the town and wander upwards at your own pace. You will encounter incredible views with nearly every step. Follow the road which snakes its way toward the town or climb the stairs which also lead upward. "Echoes of the past will engulf you.

Looking for ideas for a day out in Almería? There's plenty to do, in this southern and exotic city. There are galleries to explore, exhibitions to see, in addition to the famous sights, shopping and eating opportunities! A day out in Almería can leave you footsore, but make a little time for a visit to the Flamenco museum located in the Arab Baths. Olé!Constructed in the 11th century, they were reservoirs for the welcome water which flowed from the springs of Redonda and Larga, the water was then doled out to the many city fountains. So not really baths per se, more of an ancient water system, and today restored and preserved beautifully.Arab Baths Hammam Almeraya Calle Perea, 9 950 23 10 10
