Food Scene

The White Chocolate Bourbon Glazed Bread Pudding at Perch is the best bread pudding I've had in LA (so far). Also try the mussels and the braised short rib. There's live music on the weekends, and the rooftop is a great place to have a drink while taking in the cityscape. Most people go here for the rooftop bar, but I definitely go for the bread pudding.

My typical night in the Arts District starts with dinner at Wurstküche. I haven't actually tried the more exotic sausages, such as rattlesnake or rabbit, but my go-to spicy sausage is the Louisiana Hot Link. The truffle fries are also super delicious, though a small order is usually enough for two people to share.

Salt & Straw is right across the street from Wurstküche in the Arts District, and is usually where I'll go to satisfy my ice cream craving. There are unique flavors, such as Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese, and Avocado & Oaxacan Chocolate Fudge, but I usually end up getting Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. The secret to this spot is that there is actually seating across the street, on rectangular wooden blocks by the trees.

This local coffee shop is pretty good, but it's really the plain croissants that are worth checking it out for. They're flaky and buttery, and it's hard to eat just one. I typically get just an iced latte with my croissant, which is pretty smooth. There are also pre-made salads and bowls that you can pick up on the go.

Only 10 minutes from Glassell Park, Wanderlust has a variety of really solid flavors. Try the Thai Tea and Sticky Rice + Mango, though I usually end up getting the Ube Malted Crunch on an Ube waffle cone. The Flight Around the World, which is a 14 mini-scoop flight, isn't really worth it since the scoops are so small.

The best o-toro and chu-toro in NELA! There is outdoor dining in the back and the sashimi is high-quality. Perfect for a date night or just a dinner to treat yourself.

Drinks & Nightlife

This eclectic local bar in Glassell Park has a good mix of people - it hasn't been entirely taken over by hipsters yet. It's got a great vibe for day-drinking, and there are often food trucks or vendors on-site. There are also live DJs playing occasionally, and the hard-to-find Pliny the Elder IPA on draft. It's not a huge space, but it's a fun place to chill for an afternoon (or evening, when the string lights turn on!) with a few friends.

The thing I love about the Arts District is how walkable everything is. After dinner at Wurstküche, my friends and I will usually walk down a couple of blocks to Angel City Brewery for beer and cornhole. My favorite beers here are the Berliner Weisse with pomegranate syrup, and the White Nite, which is a golden stout. While most people are in the main building, there is a smaller building with picnic tables, which are great for actually being able to hear each other talk. There are usually food trucks on-site, but you can also bring your own food in.

Entertainment & Activities

This isn’t any ordinary bowling alley – Highland Park Bowl has a speakeasy feel with vintage flair AND great pizza. Even if you don’t bowl, it’s definitely worth checking out or stopping by for a drink at the bar. Go on a Friday night and watch the weekly burlesque show.
