Sightseeing

Located only 5.3 miles from The Pink Flamingo. From 1958, when it was built, to 1962 it had the distinction of being the brightest lighthouse in the US and the second brightest in the world. The lighthouse is run by volunteers and is open to the public (second level only) on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 AM - 2 PM, starting Memorial Day and running through Labor Day. Climbing to the top is available with a reservation only which be scheduled at least 4 weeks advance during the summer months. If you are considering a “climb” to the top, I encourage you to check out the website and get your reservation in ASAP as they fill up quickly!

Great for kids, young and old! You can either get there by driving through Wilmington (about an hour and twenty minutes) or by very reasonably priced ferry from Southport; kind of a fun thing to do anyway, and The Pink Flamingo is only a twenty minute drive to the ferry terminal. You can even take your car on the ferry if you wanted to drive one way and take the ferry the other.

Also a fun thing for kids! The battleship is huge! Unless you are in super great shape, you probably won’t see it all in a day. Look closely for alligators sunning themselves in the river, but don’t get too close! Lots of nice restaurants on the waterfront, just across the river in Wilmington.

Entertainment & Activities

One mile from The Pink Flamingo, and what beach trip is complete is complete without putt-putt and ice cream? It is recommended that you go early in the day to beat the heat, and (particularly) the crowds. It can get busy!

THE BEST seafood market you will ever visit! Fish is cut to order right off the bone. The best and freshest local shrimp and oysters. If you are cooking seafood in this is where you must go, and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations, both of the seafood and how to cook it. Try the cheese grits and key lime pie as well. Yummmm!

There are tons of antique and thrift stores on Oak Island if you like that sort of thing. The Hoarders has lots of unique things, both old and new. Others are The Hope Chest (benefits victims of domestic violence) and "Cool Stuff" both located at 56th and Oak Island Drive, and The Painted Mermaid, located at 1208 North Howe Street in Southport.
