Drinks & Nightlife

Pub & The People is cozy and seldom overcrowded -- a great place for brunch or happy hour. The service is friendly and fast, but not pretentious. The food is great, as are the drinks. And they have gluten free beer in bottles for the Celiac crowd.

Boundary Stone is one of the newest establishments in the neighborhood. It's hipster-chic - high ceilings, a huge wraparound bar, and a low-light atmosphere. It's more of a date place; the staff prefers to seat people rather than have them stand by the bar. Local bands are often playing at night, and the Monday open mic is usually jam-packed with musicians, artists, and other creatively inclined locals. The drinks are great, and the food is good. (But watch out -- the burger has beet in it -- it's that kind of "foodie" nouveau americain menu). The one knock on this place is that it can be hard to get servers' attention, especially at the bar.

Great fried chicken, fried chicken sandwiches, hot chicken, hot chicken sandwiches, and French Fries. The bar upstairs is small and cozy. Very cool, friendly, and laid back staff. The upstairs bar is a great place to meet up with friends. This is a local favorite. Make sure to close the door behind you when you walk in. :)

Red Hen is known as one of the best restaurants in the city, and it deserves the reputation. It's got a beautiful classy-rustic interior. It's got plenty of space -- just as you'd expect from a more upscale restaurant. The website says it has Italian influence, but we pick up more of a farm-to-table vibe. We really like this place for special occasions.

The barbecue and sides here are excellent -- flavorful and smoky. Order and pick up at the counter -- no table service. They have beers on draft and look like they'll soon complete an outdoor seating area. This is a great new spot.

Parks & Nature

In the summer, the top draw at Harry Thomas is the beautiful outdoor pool. Locals sun themselves and hang out all day -- it can be tough to get a lounge chair, but if you're patient, you can snag one. Year round, there's a football/soccer field, a baseball diamond, basketball and tennis courts, and a playground for small kids. It's a good nearby spot for stretching your legs.

This trail runs alongside the Red line Metro. It's very urban, not really an escape from the city atmosphere, but it does provide a long stretch of walking and biking path that's uninterrupted by cross streets. Lots of murals by local artists help to beautify the surroundings, which are otherwise mid-20th century commercial and industrial buildings. Great for runners or as the start of a bike ride down to Capitol Hill, this is also a fun way to get to the NoMA or Rhode Island Metro stops.
