Built in the 1850s, Sydney’s copper-domed, Italianate observatory squats atop pretty Observatory Hill, overlooking the harbour. Inside is a collection of vintage apparatus, including Australia’s oldest working telescope (1874). Also on offer are audiovisual displays, including Aboriginal sky stories and a virtual reality 3D Theatre. Bookings are essential for night-time stargazing sessions (adult/child $18/12).

Built in 1858 Sydney Observatory is a fascinating heritage site and public observatory. The quintessential visit is a night tour of 90 minute duration which includes telescope viewing and a 3D Space Theatre experience with a planetarium experience in cloudy weather. Day tours are designed for tourists and include a Planetarium 'virtual sky' experience, solar viewing (weather permitting) and a 3D Space Theatre in 30-40 minute tours. Entry to the Observatory is free during the day, tours are a small extra charge ($10 adult or you can use the iventure Sydney card) but well worth it to experience modern astronomy and solar viewing with an astronomer. Night tours ($18 adult) must be booked and prepaid.

Lovely park and you can watch the stars from the serious telescope. Still on to do list so let me know what it is like if you venture out.
