If you are travelling by car, this is a great place to visit. A 25 minute drive to Barnard Castle (DL12 8NP), will take you to this fantastic building which hosts many a great exhibition. It is £15.50 per adult which gives you unlimited entry at The Bowes Museum with access to their temporary exhibitions all year around.

Approximately one hours drive across extensive open heather moorland, The Bowes Museum is an unexpected surprise for most visitors, the scale and stature of this purpose built museum, founded in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes in his ancestral town of Barnard Castle. It is a typical piece of french style architecture but stands out formidably against the local town, and houses the extensive collection of art and objet d'art of its founders, passionately acquired over their lifetime. There is an excellent cafe and is set alongside a vibrant market town with antiques shopping and tea rooms.

Unique architecture and great art and artefacts, together with a decent cafe. Great for a rainy day or for something a bit different, especially if you like French-style architecture!
