Punaluʻu beach is the most famous black sand beach of Hawaii. Two reasons for the popularity of this beach are the gorgeous black sand beach *and* the fact that you can often see endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles basking in the sun on the beach.

Unique black sand beach. In addition to the lifeguard, this beach has bathrooms, showers, picnic areas, and plenty of parking. The south end of the beach is more heavily used while the north end is often more empty. Camping is allowed with a permit.

For a fun filled beach day the famous Punalu’u Black Sand beach is an excellent choice. The naturally created volcanic cove is only a short 7 min drive away. Be sure to pack a cooler with some drinks and snacks and enjoy the beach basking sea turtles, snorkeling, and scenic views this hidden gem has to offer. Life guards are on duty for added safety and a gift shack/ snack shop is located beach side for some souvenirs shopping (Daytime business hours)

If you are on your way to the Volcano this is a must see for turtle viewing.

This is a black sand beach. And yes, turtles do rest here. Bring drinking water and snacks.
