Some of North Carolina’s most dramatic mountain scenery is found at Chimney Rock State Park, with the signature 315-foot spire overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. Admission is charged.

This is where they filmed “Last of the Mohicans”. Lots of stuff for kids, scheduled programs by rangers. Also lots of cute places to shop and eat in Bat Cave. Go past the Rock for a pretty cool hike that ends up at the top of Hickory Nut Falls.

Hiking trails with gorgeous views over Lake Lure. We pack a lunch and eat it on the terrace. Then, we hike to the waterfall and take the loop course. It is challenging at places, but exciting as well. We do avoid the steps, not good for our knees and joints... As a special event in the summertime, we cool off by stepping under the waterfall. Ice-cold water, but refreshing. Don't forget a bathing suit and something to dry you off. The entrance fee is the only drawback.
