City/town information

Richmond is pretty cobbled Georgian market town, rich in history and known to be the northern gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. It's filled with historical buildings, fantastic scenery and a variety of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. It's main attraction; the castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, is built high above the river swale on the 'riche-mont' (or 'strong-hill') which the town's name derives from.

Sightseeing

You don't need to book in advance to visit the castle but you can if you wish - tickets are available online up to 8.45am on the day you'd like to go. Tickets are £7.60 per adult (donation included). It's definitely a must-see. It's also nice to have a little stroll around 'the castle walk' following your tour. Take a seat on one of the benches overlooking the river whilst enjoying a nice hot drink or some fish and chips!

Take a walk down Tower Street (there'll be some steps at the end of the pathway) and on to Millgate. It's just a short stroll downhill from here until you reach the River Swale. The falls are located in a limestone gorge. They're a local favourite - you can get some great pictures here. Take a walk alongside the river, following the footpath to the left of the waterfalls and head towards 'The Batts'. There are steps here that lead you back up towards the town centre or you can continue walking and head across Mercury bridge towards 'The Station' where you'll find the local swimming pool, cinema, cafe, ice cream parlour and award-winning ‘The Angel’s Share' bakery. Please be careful of 'Richmond Falls' during bad weather as it can get badly flooded here. The waterfalls can also attract a high volume of people during summer months who are up for a party(!) so it may be worth avoiding on these days if you fancy a quiet stroll!

Theatre

A lovely historic theatre with so much character. Take a tour and go behind the scenes of the theatre itself or watch one of their latest productions - it's great atmosphere and a beautiful setting.

Walks

There is a lovely scenic riverside walk from Richmond Castle to Easby Abbey and I'd highly recommend it! Easby is a great place to visit with plenty of historical stop off points, including the picturesque ruined abbey and St Agatha's Church next door. (There is a car park next to St Agatha's Church in Easby, if you'd rather not walk from the apartment. Postcode: DL10 7EU)

An easy and enjoyable 'loop' walk next to the river. Alternatively, if you're more of a keen walker then Willance's Leap is a favourite for locals. Directions of which can be found here: https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/resources/files/37895/ Willance's Leap is a monument marking the miraculous escape of a local draper named after Robert Willance who, in 1606, got lost in fog whilst out on his horse and ended up running off the edge of the cliff. Robert survived, with many broken bones, and was kept alive by keeping himself warm inside his dead horse - his grave can still be found in the C of E church in Richmond. Even without its fascinating history, the location of Willance's Leap is beautiful place to stop and admire the views up lower Swaledale.

The Green Howard's Museum opened in 1922. It began after WWI when the relatives of soldiers who died in the war gave personal items to the regiment, including uniforms, medals and other memorabilia. It can be found in the centre of Richmond marketplace. Address: Trinity Church Square, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, DL10 4QN

Food scene

A great place to gather or to wander down to. It's just a ten minute walk from Tower Street, over Mercury bridge. A former Victorian former railway station, 'The Station' is now a popular gallery space for exhibiting artists. It also features... - A small cinema - A wonderful cafe (which serves great pizzas) - An award-winning bakery; 'The Angel's Share' (try their fruit scones, you won't regret it!) - An ice-cream parlour; 'Archers' (my FAVOURITE place to get ice-cream from) - Richmond Brewing Company - The Shop (some great gifts here)

A beautiful setting with 200 private acres on a Georgian country estate - a very popular local wedding destination. Head to 'The Coach House' if you'd like a fancy lunchtime or evening meal. I'd highly recommend reserving in advance as this place gets booked up pretty quick! It also offers facials, massages, manicures and pedicures in 'The Treatment Rooms', found just opposite The Coach House.

A stunning building that sits next door to the Georgian Theatre and has been a part of the town for almost 350 years. Head here for drinks or for a special meal! It is slightly more upmarket than the other establishments in Richmond (with the exception of the King's Head Hotel)
