Banba's Crown, Malin Head, Co Donegal Enter Malin Head along the West Side of the Wild Atlantic Way's Inishowen Peninsula and continue to the most Northerly point in Ireland (the tip) called Banba's Crown "The Tower" as it's locally known was builtin 1805 as part of a string of buildings right around the Irish Coast to guard against a possible French invasion. Wonderful views over the coast and mountains of the Inishowen Peninsula rewards everyone, who make their way up the hill! Starting from Banba's Crown, there is a hiking trail along deep ravines ("Hell's Hole") and mountain ledges ("Devil's Bridge") all the way to Malin Head! The hiking trail is rather known for its dramatic natural highlights than anything else. Banba's Crown, Malin Head was also a filming location for part of Star Wars. Eire Signs were navigational markers placed around the country to alert WWII pilots they were flying over neutral Ireland. The Wee house of Malin can be found on the shorefront in Malin Head, down a very steep hill. It is in fact, a little cave, which legend has, that it was inhabited by a holy man and its suggested the holy man was St Muirdhealach. There are stone seat round the interior and legend also claims that it accommodates all that enter it. Beside the cave are the ruins of an ancient church dedicated to St Muirdhealach. The church is roughly 800 years old. The Holy well is located in the natural cavern in the rock on the shore directly below the church. The well was blessed by St Muirdhealach and is said to have healing properties. On the 15th August which is the Feast of the Assumption, there is a pilgrimage here, where pilgrims all over Donegal would take part. This pilgrimage was known as the Malin Well Fair. This is a gorgeous, rugged sea front with easy access by car. It is next to a steep pebble beach with fascinating coastal rock forms. A little gem!

Five Finger Strand is one of the most famous beaches in inishowen as it has some of the highest sand dunes in Europe reaching a height of 30 metres. The name of the beach comes from the five sea stacks that protrude up like fingers on the north side of the beach. Car parking for the beach can be found beside the main road of the beautiful St Mary's Church which was built in 1784. It is one of the oldest Catholic Churches still in use in Ireland today. Outside the church, sits an ancient Baptismal Font from the 6th century which was from the old monastery at St Mura's in Fahan. You then just need to follow the road the short distance down to the beach. It is also the site of the wreck of the 'Twilight' which sank in 1889 on its way from Newfoundland in Canada to Derry, and it can still be seen at low tide. Swimming is not permitted here due to dangerous undercurrents and rip tides.
