Sightseeing

Ashgill Force is only a very short walk from Gatecroft. Turn left out of the front gate and walk up the hill (marked with dead end sign) Opposite Garrigill Estate you will see a public footpath. Take this footpath and follow along with the South Tyne on your right hand side. It's a fairly easy walk for most abilities. It does have a few stiles to climb over.

Trains run weekends and some holidays. A wonderful way to see the stunning North Pennines scenery, in a magnificent steam train. Good coffee shops at various stations if you want to get off for a snack and to explore.

For lovers of Sci-Fi/Dr Who. Small niche museum loved for it's life sized dalek outside in the quaint little market town of Allendale, where other than a sci-fi museum it feels as if nothing much has changed for decades.

Cross Fell is the highest mountain (sometimes known as Angry Mountain) in the Pennine Hills of Northern England and the highest point in England outside the Lake District. The base of Cross Fell is located at the edge of the village. Turn left out of the gate and then first right. The road turns into a track. Cross Fell summit is crowned by a cross-shaped dry-stone shelter. On a clear day there are excellent views from the summit across the Eden Valley to the mountains of the Lake District. The fell is prone to dense hill fog and fierce winds. The 15 mile hike is part of the Spine Endurance race. For those who don't relish the thought of a 15 mile hike, it is worth doing just a small section for the wonderful views, and then turning round.

High end dining for a more special occasion. Lovely to sit out and enjoy a cream tea in the grounds, or for a special occasion afternoon tea served in the historic main hall. Rampart tours can also be booked.

The small village of Nenthead in the North Pennines is England’s highest village at 1500 feet. Nenthead was a major centre for lead and silver mining, and in its time had the most productive lead mine in the country. Visit the lead mines, the miniature village, The Hive for a snack, the children's play area, and numerous walks, including the well known Isaac's tea trail.
