These are my favorite list of things to do that are less than 30 mins away.
For a fun filled beach day the famous Punalu’u Black Sand beach is an excellent choice. The naturally created volcanic cove is only a short 7 min drive away.
Be sure to pack a cooler with some drinks and snacks and enjoy the beach basking sea turtles, snorkeling, and scenic views this hidden gem has to offer.
Life guards are on duty for added safety and a gift shack/ snack shop is located beach side for some souvenirs shopping (Daytime business hours)

Punalu’u Bakery’s famous Hawaiiian sweet bread and Malasadas are just a short 20 min drive away. Satisfy your sweet tooth with their variety of baked goods they have to offer. My personal favorites are the chocolate covered malasadas and guava sweet bread. Pick up a dozen or two you won’t be disappointed. (Open Monday-Sunday 8:30am-5pm)

Wine tasting starts at just $15 and includes 6 (1oz) pours of wines dry to sweet. Different types of grape wines, top-selling fruit blends and honey meads all of which are so delicious.
They also offer house made cheese platters, Estate tea tastings, Ka'u coffee and other refreshments are available as well. (10am-5:30pm)

Sightseeing
Head up about 25 minutes towards Kilauea to experience Steam vents, a crater rim hike, lava tube exploring, lunch and amazing drinks on the edge of a caldera. There’s no shortage of activities at the Volcano National Park.
