The monastery of Agia Marina Vonis is located 500m south of the village of Voni and on the day of its celebration (July 17th) it gathers the most crowds of believers from any other monastery in Crete, with tails of kilometers from cars and outdoors stalls. Many are the ones who have vows in Agia Marina and come to the monastery from Heraklion or other areas. The monastery was founded in 1895 by Ioannis Kaparounakis at a point where it is said that he had drunk water and helped him miraculously to recover from a disease. There was already a small 14th-15th-century chapel at the point where the holy water spilled but was owned by a Turk, Hossef Pasha, who did not want to leave the monastery erected. It is said that St. Marina then intervened and punished the Turk, as all three of his children became ill. Having understood what had happened, the Turk found Kaparounakis and gave him the property. Since then this chapel has been renovated and the women's monastery of Agia Marina has been built around it. Today we can see part of the old temple at the arch of the sanctuary, where very few frescoes survive. Agia Marina is considered a protector of the sick children and there are testimonies of miracles in the monastery. Impression creates the room with the various personal types of those who lived their miracle, such as crutches.
