History amidst colourful Bo Kaap outskirts of city centre. Whilst there also go to Iziko Bo Kaap Museum. Pop into Atlas Spices for Cape Malay spice and Rose Café for a traditional samoosa or koeksister (if they haven't sold out of them!)
District Six Foundation was founded in 1989 and the museum in 1994, as a memorial to the forced movement of 60,000 inhabitants of various races in District Six during Apartheid in South Africa in 1970s.
A small museum but worthwhile visiting to learn some of the history of South Africa. Charly's Bakery is nearby.
This memory trip exposes and celebrates a rich and fascinating history of truly amazing people who lived in our city during a time of cruel and harsh laws which divided our society. But the visit to this unique and fascinating cultural heritage site is of great significance to our nation's healing and restoration.
