Mussenden Temple is located in the beautiful surroundings of Downhill Demesne near Castlerock in Co. Derry. It perches dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, above the Atlantic Ocean with spectacular views west over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head.

Strictly speaking, Mussenden is not a temple, but a small circular building located on cliffs near Castlerock. But that doesn't mean it is not worth a visit, if for the stunning setting alone: It stands proudly in the grounds of the ruined Downhill house, the previous residence of the Bishop of Derry, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland. The Temple was built as a library for his cousin Mrs Mussenden who died at a young age, and is nowadays mainly visited for the incredible views across the sea to Castlerock and Donegal are incredible. If you are fortunate to go when the Temple is open, the visit will be even more memorable: Classical musical concerts
