The National Museum of San Carlos is defined by the extensive collection it houses, which is made up of European painting, sculpture and engravings from the 14th to the early 20th centuries, which gives rise to its exhibition, dissemination, conservation and research. In order to promote avant-garde readings on the collection and the neoclassical building authored by the architect Manuel Tolsá, the Museum has held dialogues with national and international artists to create new lines of research and to attract diverse audiences.

Tiene su origen en la colección que se empezó a formar a finales del siglo XVIII en la Real Academia de las Tres Nobles Artes de San Carlos de la Nueva España.
