Located atop one of Havana’s hills, the university is where the most important Cuban architects developed their craft. The neoclassical stairs are like a welcome mat for students and visitors, evoking the Greek Acropolis. It’s a completely remote location in the middle of the city, surrounded by lots of greenery. Walk down the street known as San Lazaro and climb up the stairs—it’s tradition that students walk them on their very first day of class. You must see the great lecture hall and the math building. But be warned: mornings are very busy.

Address: San Lazaro y L, Vedado. Description: The most impressive part of the University, at least as seen from outside, is the flight of steps or escalinata that lead up to the front section of the campus where you can take a picture with the Alma Mater statue. The university has occupied this site since 1902 and with students being key players in national politics in Cuba. The University has seen many important political mobilisations over the years, especially in the early and mid 1920s, in 1933 and again in the mid and late 1950s. Some of the buildings are constructed in neoclassical style and are worth exploring.

The Universidad de La Habana (University of Havana) was founded by Dominican monks from the Order of Preachers in 1728, and secularized in 1842. The university was originally located in Old Havana, but was moved in 1902 to Vedado to this Neoclassical construction from the second quarter of the 20th century. This university is the oldest in Cuba and one of the first in America. Its building was declared a National Monument in 1978. At the lower end of the stairway of the University of Havana is the Monument to Julio Antonio Mella, dedicated to the student leader who founded the first Cuban Communist Party in 1925 and was assassinated by the order of Machado in Mexico City. This is one of the most well-known parts of the University, as other than the monument, there are black and white portraits of Mella on display, hanging on walls in the park just in front of San Lázaro.
