Very old Amsterdam bar. Only building left with a wooden facade (all others burned down over the centuries in city fires).
Tip Adriaan: Visit the characteristic street I used to live on: the Zeedijk. Untill a few decades ago, this area was so unsafe it was considered a no-go area. Luckily, it has flourished once more. Specifically this bar is a fine example of the rich history, ask when you order and be amazed.
One of the last two original wooden houses in Amsterdam with a special story. This wooden house on the Zeedijk 1 was built in 1550 and is one of the last two original wooden houses in Amsterdam. In the 17th century many sailors surprised all their money, so they could not pay their bills at the end of their leave. The owner of In 't Aepjen, then an inn, asked one of his customers to take a monkey for him from the tropics, to settle his debt. Other sailors also brought monkeys, until the inn was full of monkeys ... and with fleas. Nowadays there is a café here, which is still called 'In 't Aepjen'.
