A beautiful park with an impressive rock formations and a great history. There is a pool and a chairlift as well as many hiking trails.
They have a chair lift! There is also a pool in the park and some great playgrounds. But the must see is the actual natural tunnel which is a great walk. You can take the chairlift down and/or back if you get tired.
About 11/2hour drive. Take I26 toward Johnson City, as interstate ends continue on same road as it becomes US 23. Continue north to beautiful state park.
Made by water running through a limestone ridge for thousands of years, the tunnel/cave is surrounded on three sides by 400 foot cliffs. Daily coal trains can be seen roaring through! The park offers seven trails for hikers with birds and plants unique to the area. You can also use the chairlift. "Lighting of the Tunnel" held after Thanksgiving thru the week before Christmas is literally breathtaking! With area choirs, ensembles and acoustic bands this is a great time to visit the tunnel. During the summer the tunnel is lit once a month.
