Famous 17th century gardens by William Kent with flowers, follies and water features - leading down to the Cherwell. Beautiful.

A very easy trip towards the Cotswolds not far from Bicester is Rousham House and gardens. Definitely worth a visit for all garden lovers. It is unspoit and said to be almost as it was in the 18th century when it was designed by William Kent. Rousham.net

Only 7 miles away from Masons cottage Rousham is completely unspoilt and uncommercialised – no tea room and no shop – just glorious gardens to explore at your leisure. Bring a picnic and comfortable shoes and it is yours for the day. Don’t miss the walled garden with its herbaceous borders, small parterre, pigeon house and espaliers. One of England’s most important gardens, Rousham represents the first phase of English landscape design and remains almost as its designer William Kent left it. Many of the features that delighted its 18th century visitors are still there for 21st century visitors to enjoy. A favourite of many great garden designers, in his ‘Around the World in Eighty gardens” Monty Don says “Kent is the great genius of eighteenth-century garden design and Rousham is his masterpiece, one of the greatest gardens in the world”

Designed by William Kent, Rousham remains unspoilt and uncommercialised. Spend the day exploring – there are walled gardens with herbaceous borders, a pigeon house, kitchen garden, and the park is home to a herd of Longhorn cattle. With something for everyone, including water features, fruit trees, statues, and fountains, we suggest you pack a delicious picnic and stop, breathe, and soak up the beautiful, idyllic sights and heady scents of one of England’s most important gardens. With thousands of ways to walk around, the spectacular gardens are enough to keep visitors entertained for hours. If you’re still keen to see more, the lovely manor house, built in 1635 and modified by William Kent in the 1740s, is open by appointment.
