Short-term rental license

The town of Amherstburg, ON requires that all short-term rental (STR) owners obtain an annual license before they may begin renting their properties. An authorized agent may apply on behalf of the property owner, provided that they meet certain requirements. Tenants must obtain written approval from the property owner and include it in the application. The application fee for a new license is $550, and renewal fees are $500. Applicants or the authorized agent(s) must provide proof of residency status in Canada. Operating a short-term rental

Short-term rental operators must provide guests with a Renter’s Code of Conduct (you can view a sample here), as well as comply with the maximum occupancy calculation and the parking management plan.

Building and housing standards

Amherstburg, ON requires that all short-term rental properties complete their Fire Safety Checklist. Interconnected fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers, among other requirements, must be installed. A town official may request to view the license and inspect the property.

Other contracts and rules 

It's also important to understand and abide by other contracts or rules that bind you, such as leases, condo board or co-op rules, HOA rules, or rules established by tenant organizations. Please read your lease agreement and check with your landlord if applicable.
